MS Word will not open properly. I tried to uninstall and reinstall with no change. I get a message "there is an error and can't open. The option to repair provided also doesn't work. It was working until I installed Access which required 4+ hours of your tech support time to get it to install on Jan 1 2026, early morning hours.

Each time i tried to lunch any of the Microsoft offices this message: "We're sorry, but word has run into an error that is preventing if from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result" keep popping up and then the program will shut down authomatically.

Hi Nancy Hamel,
I haven't received any updates since your message. Has everything been resolved yet?
Hi Nancy Hamel,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum and explaining the situation in detail. I’m sorry to hear how frustrating this has been and I understand how disruptive it is when Word suddenly stops working after that effort.
Based on similar cases, this type of issue can occur when Microsoft 365 components become out of sync or corrupted after installing or modifying another Office app such as Access. In these situations, a standard uninstall/reinstall or the basic “Repair” option shown in Word often isn’t sufficient.
Here are some steps that you can kindly take:
1.Search from Task Scheduler, then go to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Office. Right-click Office Automatic Updates 2.0 > Run. After that, kindly reopen Word.
2.Start Word in Safe Mode by holding CTRL while opening Word. If prompted, please choose Yes to start in Safe Mode.
3.Reset template by opening CMD and run ren %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm OldNormal.dotm. Then restart Word again. A broken Normal.dotm is one of the most common causes when Word refuses to start.
I hope one of the steps above resolves the issue quickly. Please let me know how it goes, or if you need help contacting Microsoft Support again.
