My ASUS VivoBook X415FA touchpad stopped working last week and disappeared from Device Manager. I uninstalled the ASUS Precision Touchpad and I2C HID Device hoping that they would reinstall after restarting , then manually reinstalled the ASUS Precision Touchpad driver from the asus website but the touchpad still does not appear even in the hidden. Could someone guide me on how to properly restore the I2C/Serial IO drivers so Windows detects the touchpad again and my touchpad works again

Hi Neeraj Narayanan,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

Since this is a public forum, we will hide your personal identifiable information, and I have sent that image of yours containing your personal identifiable information in a private message so we can work together to resolve the issue. Also, please check your private message in case you want to share another screenshot to avoid leaking your PII by click on the Private Message button right under your first post.

Regarding your information, you might have hardware issue with your touchpad.

Please troubleshoot with following suggestions:

  • Turn off your laptop and hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds. Your laptop will re-initiate devices and may recognize the touchpad. Does it work after that?
  • Does the touchpad work after you install all the drivers?
  • Does the touchpad work on BIOS?
  • Does the touchpad work on Safe Mode?

If the answer for all above questions is "No", then it's most likely that you have hardware issue with your touchpad. Please send your laptop to a service center for further assistance.

I hope that you will find the cause and be able to resolve the issue soon.

Go to the support page for your laptop on the Asus website, then in the Chipset drivers section, click 'Show All', scroll down the list of the Chipset drivers and you will find the installer for the 12C Serial IO drivers.

If you have any difficulty locating that support page, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

To troubleshoot the issue with your ASUS VivoBook X415FA touchpad not appearing in Device Manager, you can follow these steps:

    1. Check Device Manager: Ensure that the touchpad is not hidden. In Device Manager, click on "View" and select "Show hidden devices". Look for the touchpad under "Mice and other pointing devices" or "Human Interface Devices".
    2. Update Drivers: Right-click on the I2C HID Device and select "Update driver". Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software". If Windows finds a new driver, allow it to install.
    3. Reinstall I2C Drivers: If the touchpad still does not appear, you may need to reinstall the I2C drivers. You can do this by:
      • Going to Device Manager, right-clicking on "I2C HID Device" and selecting "Uninstall device". Make sure to check the option to delete the driver software if prompted.
      • Restart your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers.
    4. Check BIOS Settings: Sometimes, the touchpad can be disabled in the BIOS. Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F2 or Del during startup). Look for touchpad settings and ensure it is enabled.
    5. Verify ACPI Configuration: If the touchpad is still not detected, there might be an issue with the ACPI firmware. Ensure that the ACPI configuration is correct, and the device is properly recognized in the BIOS.
    6. Use Windows Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, and run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to consult ASUS support for further assistance.
