My internal camera is missing when it is still installed on my device.

My camera will not appear on the list of options on Camera. I have a screenshot.

My OS is standard Windows 11, I'm using a Asus laptop from 2021 with a 10th Gen Core i3. My built in camera is still on my physical device.

The camera might have been deleted from Settings.

Pressing the f10 button will only ever say; "Camera Off"

Please help

Dear Kevin Cockburn

Thank you for your question and for sharing the details into Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand how inconvenient this is, especially when the built-in camera is physically present, but it no longer appears in the Camera app and the F10 key always shows “Camera Off.” At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the Independent Advisor’s answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario. To help narrow this down, could you please share a few details below?

  • In Device Manager, do you see the camera listed under Cameras or Imaging devices? If yes, does it show any warning icon or an error code?
  • In Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, are the toggles for Camera access and Let apps access your camera turned On?
  • Does your ASUS laptop have a physical privacy shutter/switch near the webcam lens?
  • Are you using a managed/work device (company/school) with security software or policies that may block the camera?
  • Could you share the screenshot you mentioned, plus the exact ASUS model name (for example: VivoBook Xxxx / ZenBook Xxxx)?

In the meantime, here are a few basic steps you can try:

  1. Check the ASUS camera hotkey / hardware privacy
  • Please try Fn + F10 (some ASUS models require the Fn key in combination).
  • If your device has a physical shutter, make sure it’s open.
  • Restart the device once and test the Camera app again.
  1. Confirm Windows camera permissions
  • Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera
  • Turn On: Camera access, Let apps access your camera and Let desktop apps access your camera (if available)
  • Close Settings, then open the Camera app and check if the camera appears.
  1. Check Device Manager
  • Right-click Start > Device Manager
  • Expand: Cameras and/or Imaging devices
  • If you don’t see the camera: Click View > Show hidden devices then click Action > Scan for hardware changes
  • If you do see the camera:
    • If it is disabled: right-click it > Enable device
    • If it shows an error: right-click it > Uninstall device
  • If you see an option like Remove/attempt to remove the driver, select it (if available)
  • Restart the device and test again
  1. Repair/Reset the Camera app
  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
  • Find Camera > Advanced options > Repair then check again
  • If the issue continues, select Reset
  • Reopen the Camera app and check again.
  1. Install driver updates
  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
  • Then go to Advanced options > Optional updates
  • Install any driver updates related to Camera / Imaging / USB / chipset, then restart and test.
  1. Repair Windows system files
  • Please open Command Prompt / Windows Terminal as Administrator, then run each: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow
  • Restart the device after both commands complete and test the Camera app again.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope the steps above help restore detection of your built-in camera and allow it to appear correctly in the Camera app again. Wishing you a smooth experience getting the camera back up and running on your ASUS laptop so you can continue your work without interruption.

Hi

Access msinfo32.exe in the search bar, take a screenshot and post it here?

Do you have any third-party antivirus software installed?

Take a screenshot in Device Manager and post it here.

Thanks
