Today I did something that completely changed my formatting on my word invoices

They are no longer recognizable. It appears they were not backed up, so no chance of restoring a previous version. Even when using a backup, it appears as gibberish in word now. I even tried uninstalling and re-installing word, and the same nonsense. What are my options? Here is a before and after version of the document. This is annoying.

    Hello Mark Schneider

Thank you for reaching out to the Q&A Forum, and I’m sorry for the delayed reply.

I completely understand how stressful it is when your important documents suddenly look unrecognizable, especially when you're dealing with invoices. Let's try a few quick steps to see if we can get your layout back to normal.

First, could you please try clicking the ¶ icon on the Home tab? This should hide those blue formatting symbols you're seeing.

Next, please go to the View tab and check if Print Layout is selected. If it isn't, please switch to Print Layout and let me know if the file looks any better. It would be very helpful if you could send me a new screenshot after trying these two steps.

If you are already in Print Layout but the logo and table borders are still invisible, please try the following:

    • Go to Word in the top menu bar > Preferences.
    • Select View.
    • Under the "Show in document" section, make sure Drawings is checked and Text boundaries is unchecked.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, could you please provide a bit more information:

    • Which version of macOS and Office are you currently using?

According to your first screen shot you've merely selected Draft View. Just revert to Print Layout View and all should be as expected. There are at least 3 ways to switch View modes:

    • Use View> Print Layout in the menu bar
    • Click the Print Layout tool on the View tab of the Ribbon
    • Click the Print Layout button in the View Shortcuts at the right end of the Status Bar

Note that graphic objects & formatting are not displayed in Draft View. It's intended for more efficient editing or complex documents. Outline View doesn't display graphic content either.
