Hi Paul,

Based on your description, this is a personal Windows 10 Home device protected with BitLocker, and the recovery key should be retrievable only through your Microsoft account if it was backed up there. Please try the following.
Step 1 – Check your Microsoft account for the BitLocker recovery key
Please sign in to your Microsoft account using a working device and visit: https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey
Once signed in:
- Look for a recovery key that matches the Key ID shown on the BitLocker recovery screen.
- If found, use that key to unlock the SSD.
Step 2 – Confirm whether the key was ever backed up
If you do not see any recovery keys listed on Microsoft account recovery key page, it usually means:
- The key was never backed up to the Microsoft account, or
- It was saved elsewhere (for example, a printed copy or a file saved manually).
Step 3 – Using the SSD on another computer (data access check)
If you connect the SSD to another Windows PC:
- Windows will still require the same BitLocker recovery key.
- Without that key, the data on the drive cannot be accessed.
Warning: Formatting the drive will remove BitLocker, but it will permanently erase all data on the SSD.
Step 4 – When no recovery key is available
If the recovery key cannot be found in your Microsoft account and was not saved elsewhere, Microsoft confirms that:
- The encrypted data cannot be recovered
- Your remaining option is to erase and reuse the drive
