Can't get Outlook to toggle from Offline to Online

About a week ago I realized I wasn't receiving or sending messages from my gmail account on Outlook. I have gone through the repair help section but have no success in getting my Outlook to toggle to online. It appears to be stuck in offline. I never work offline.

I am connected to the server. I can go to Google mail and see, send and receive all messages. I can use the internet, no problem. I can not get the Work Offline off my gmail account. It does not toggle to anything. It stays in the Work Offline mode.

didn't get beyond the first step- Start Outlook in Safe Mode

Steps should look like this:

Windows Key +R

User's image

You enter outlook.exe /safe and click [OK]

User's image

This should start Outlook in Safe Mode.

If it doesn't work here are some alternative ways to do the same thing.

After much digging, I finally figured that under "Microsoft apps & services wants access to your Google Account" that states "Read, compose, send and permanently delete all your email from..." got unchecked. I checked the box and now I am all synched up and online again! Thank you all for your input and help.

I tried to do your suggested steps

For the second step "Clear cached credentials ..." I have a write up with pictures that may help if you run into problems.

    Dear Terry Storholm

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I’m sorry to hear that Classic Outlook for Windows is keeping your Gmail account stuck in Work Offline and won’t toggle back online—even though Gmail works fine in the browser. I’m happy to assist you.

To scope this correctly, please reply with: Your Outlook version/build (File > Office Account) and whether your Gmail was added using the Google sign-in (OAuth) flow or as IMAP/POP.

Meanwhile, please also try these steps:

    • Start Outlook in Safe Mode, then toggle Work Offline off
      • Close Outlook > press Win + R > run: outlook.exe /safe > go to Send/Receive and toggle Work Offline off. If it works in Safe Mode, the issue may be caused by an add-in or cached state.
    • Clear cached credentials that can keep Gmail stuck in an offline/auth loop
      • Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials. Remove entries related to Outlook / MicrosoftOffice16_Data / Google / Gmail, then reopen Outlook and complete the Google sign-in prompt if it appears.
    • Re-complete Gmail sign-in (OAuth) / repair the Gmail connection
    • Create a new Outlook profile (when Work Offline won’t toggle)
      • Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles > Add > set the new profile as default > re-add your Gmail account.
    • Update Outlook ( if this started recently with Gmail sign-in/sync changes)
      • In Outlook: File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.

Please let me know how it goes. If the issue continues, feel free to reply here and I’ll be glad to help further.
