Dear Terry Storholm,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I’m sorry to hear that Classic Outlook for Windows is keeping your Gmail account stuck in Work Offline and won’t toggle back online—even though Gmail works fine in the browser. I’m happy to assist you.
To scope this correctly, please reply with: Your Outlook version/build (File > Office Account) and whether your Gmail was added using the Google sign-in (OAuth) flow or as IMAP/POP.
Meanwhile, please also try these steps:
- Start Outlook in Safe Mode, then toggle Work Offline off
- Close Outlook > press Win + R > run: outlook.exe /safe > go to Send/Receive and toggle Work Offline off. If it works in Safe Mode, the issue may be caused by an add-in or cached state.
- Clear cached credentials that can keep Gmail stuck in an offline/auth loop
- Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials. Remove entries related to Outlook / MicrosoftOffice16_Data / Google / Gmail, then reopen Outlook and complete the Google sign-in prompt if it appears.
- Re-complete Gmail sign-in (OAuth) / repair the Gmail connection
- Create a new Outlook profile (when Work Offline won’t toggle)
- Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook) > Show Profiles > Add > set the new profile as default > re-add your Gmail account.
- Update Outlook ( if this started recently with Gmail sign-in/sync changes)
- In Outlook: File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
Please let me know how it goes. If the issue continues, feel free to reply here and I’ll be glad to help further.
