Outlook contacts not showing in "new" outlook

I have been using outlook for a few years on my laptop. I have 1.2026.317.100. About 6 months ago I switched to the "new" outlook. About 10 days ago, when I tried to open my contacts, I got the message "This doesn't look right". I have rebooted many times and still get the same message. I know the contacts are still present because I see them when I open outlook on my mobile phone. I reverted to the "classic" version and there are no contacts showing. Is there a way to get my contacts to be displayed when using outlook on my laptop? Having to access contact info on my phone is not a viable option option long term.

Contacts are stored and displayed differently between new Outlook and classic Outlook. To get them visible again on the laptop, use one of these supported paths:

  1. If contacts are in the mailbox (cloud contacts) Since contacts appear on the mobile app, they are likely in the mailbox, not in a local .pst file. In that case, focus on fixing the new Outlook client rather than classic Outlook:
  • Reset new Outlook’s local state so it re-syncs contacts from the server:
    • Close new Outlook.
    • Run the reset command described in the community answer (olk.exe --clearLocalState).
    • Start new Outlook again and sign in so it can fully resync mail, calendar, and contacts.
  • After resync completes, go to People in new Outlook and check if contacts display correctly.
  1. If contacts were local-only in classic Outlook If contacts were stored in a local Contacts folder in classic Outlook (for example, in a .pst file), they will not automatically appear in new Outlook. In that case:
  2. Open classic Outlook.
  3. Export local contacts to a .csv file:
    • File > Open & Export > Import/Export.
    • Choose Export to a file > Next.
    • Select Comma Separated Values > Next.
    • In Select folder to export from, choose the Contacts (This computer only) folder under the account.
    • Choose Browse, pick a save location and file name, then OK.
    • Confirm the path, select Next, then Finish.
    • Optionally open the .csv in Excel to verify contacts are present, then close without saving changes.
  4. Import that .csv into new Outlook using the documented “Import contacts to new Outlook using a .csv file” steps.
  5. If contacts were deleted from new Outlook If contacts were accidentally deleted in new Outlook, they can often be restored:
  • In new Outlook, go to People.
  • Open the Deleted folder.
  • Select the contact(s) and choose Restore.
  • If not present there, in Deleted select Recover deleted, choose the contacts, and select Restore. They will be restored to the original folder or the default Contacts folder.

If after a reset and a full resync contacts still do not show in new Outlook, verify on the web (Outlook on the web) that contacts exist in the mailbox. If they do, continue using new Outlook and avoid classic Outlook for contacts, as classic will not show cloud-only contacts without a .pst or .csv import.

I’m glad to hear your contacts are now showing again and I appreciate you sharing the steps.

To prevent this issue from happening again, keep Outlook updated and avoid frequent sign out or profile changes so the local cache stays stable. If the issue returns, repeat the local state reset to force a fresh sync since contacts are stored in your mailbox and will re-download from the server.

Hello, I see you already tried several steps and I appreciate your effort.

Are you signed in with the same account in new Outlook as the one on your phone?

In new Outlook, go to Settings, then Accounts, and confirm the correct account is set as default. Then go to People, select Manage, and ensure your contact list is selected since it may be hidden. If it still does not load, sign out of the app, restart it, then sign back in to trigger a full sync of your contacts.
