After an afternoon of no results, I uninstalled the updates from early this week. I uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook classic. It took a while for it to reload all my email. But I have it back. I also downloaded the uninstalled software, including Carbonite, and several work-specific platforms. I have now disabled Windows Updates for 5 weeks, so that I can complete these projects. We'll see in June if Windows/Microsoft has figured out a way to do Updates without destroying people's businesses. Best of luck
Outlook failed, Third-party software has disappeared
After this disastrous update, I had to hard start Windows just to be able to open the desktop. I cannot get Outlook to work at all. I have also lost software I use every day to do my work. How do I get it back.

2026-04-17T10:52:03.88+00:00 Hi Diana Witt,
Thanks for explaining what happened. I can understand the impact when Outlook won’t work and the apps you rely on for daily work seem to disappear.
To help narrow this down, could you reply with the details below?
- Are you using classic Outlook (desktop) or the new Outlook for Windows?
- What happens when you launch Outlook?
- Any error message (please paste the exact text), or
- Outlook shows in Task Manager but no window appears, or
- it opens then closes/crashes?
- Are you using Outlook with a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account through your organization?
In the meantime, please go through the AI's answer. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.
For the third‑party software, the best next step is to contact the app’s vendor/support team directly, since they can provide the correct installer or recovery steps.
While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

2026-04-16T21:07:21.3466667+00:00 Follow these steps in order, checking after each major step whether Outlook and the missing apps are working again.
- Repair or reinstall Office/Outlook
- If Outlook alone was reinstalled and still fails, uninstall the entire Office/Microsoft 365 suite, then reinstall it from the subscription.
- A full uninstall/reinstall has resolved similar cases where Outlook would not open at all after issues.
- Update Office after reinstall
- Open any Office app (Word or Excel).
- Create a new blank document.
- Select File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- Let updates complete, then check whether Outlook appears and opens correctly.
- If Outlook, Access, or Publisher are missing
- A reset or OEM recovery can remove these apps.
- Reinstall Office using the standard install method for the subscription (for example, from the Microsoft account portal). When the Office install completes, Outlook and other missing Office apps are restored and activated.
- If Outlook still will not start or crashes
- Make sure Windows is fully updated (Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates).
- Start classic Outlook in safe mode to rule out add-ins:
- Press Windows key + R, type:
-
Outlook.exe /safe
-
- Select OK.
- If Outlook opens in safe mode, disable COM add-ins:
- In Outlook, select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins > Go.
- Clear all check boxes, select OK, then restart Outlook normally.
- Press Windows key + R, type:
- If Outlook process runs but no window appears
- Open Task Manager, end any OUTLOOK.EXE processes.
- Run Outlook again, preferably first in safe mode as above.
- If Outlook shows “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window”
- Close Outlook.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
-
Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
-
- Select OK and try starting Outlook again.
- If a Windows update corrupted Outlook or apps
- If the above steps fail and the issue started immediately after a Windows update, an in-place repair of Windows (using the ISO) has been used in similar cases to restore proper operation when an update corrupted Outlook and other components.
If third-party work software is missing (not just Office apps), reinstall those applications from their original installers or vendor sites after confirming Windows and Office are stable.
