Xbox version of Streets of Rage 4 won't run on Windows 11

3 - 4 years ago I had the same problem. Numerous people came to help but none was able to. I finally went to the game's folder and deteled a bunch of dll files and asked Windows to repair the game and it worked. Game started running.

This time and reinstalled the game and the folders are all different. dll files are all merged in one. I can't use the previous trick to make it work.

Any ideas?

Already tried fixing Xbox app, any related apps by repairing and fixing. None of those works.

It keeps giving error 0x80040904

I am using surface pro 9 with Windows 11.

I actually created a second account on my Windows 11 and when I logged in there and downloaded everything and ran them, everything miraculously worked. So I solved my own problem again and no one was able to make a useful suggestion.

I reinstalled Xbox components numerous times on the admin account and everything is healthy and working but game won't open.

    Hi Kiyanoush K

Error 0x80040904 is no longer related to game DLLs. The Xbox / Microsoft Store version of Streets of Rage 4 is now MSIX‑packaged, so file deletion tricks from years ago won’t work.

    Please try the following:

    • Reinstall Gaming Services by opening PowerShell as Administrator and run:
    get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
    start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN

Reinstall it from the Store and reboot.

    • Create the game’s save/config folder manually, make sure this exists:

    C:\Users\<your_username>\Documents\Streets of Rage 4

(or under OneDrive\Documents if Documents is redirected)

    • Verify account consistency Ensure the same Microsoft account is signed into:
      • Xbox app
      • Microsoft Store
Remove any extra accounts under Settings → Accounts → Email & accounts.
    • Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool Xbox app → Profile → Support → Gaming Services Repair Tool.

If this still fails, the issue is likely platform/DRM‑side, not the game itself. In that case, submit feedback via the Xbox app, as forums cannot inspect entitlements or account state.
