Good day Martin Miller!

From your description, when you select Activate / Sign in in the Office apps on macOS, the sign-in window opens but only shows a blank “Loading” screen, so Word, Excel, and PowerPoint cannot complete the sign-in process.

This behavior might be tied to stuck Office credentials in Keychain Access, and the main suggested fixes are resetting credentials, running the Mac license removal tool, and then signing in again with the licensed account. In some cases, testing from a local/new Mac user also helps confirm whether the problem is tied to the current macOS profile.

To be more specific:

1. Reset credentials

  • Quit all Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Open Keychain Access using Spotlight search.
  • In the search box, look for “Office” and “Microsoft”, then remove the related Office/Microsoft credential items.
  • Close Keychain Access, reopen an Office app, and try signing in again.

2. Run Mac license removal tool

If the issue continues, you can try using the official Mac License Removal Tool, then restart your Mac and attempt to activate Office again.

Note: The license removal tool only clears saved activation/licensing data on your Mac, it does not delete your purchase or invalidate your license. However, please make sure you still have access to the correct Microsoft account associated with your original Office purchase, as you will need to sign in again to reactivate it after running the tool.

3. Additional methods

You could also try testing from a new Mac user accountor starting the Mac in Safe Mode or to see whether the issue is caused by the current profile or another app running in the background.

Disclaimer: The attached links above are not Microsoft websites; they are official resources published by Apple.

If the issue remains, the next step would be to uninstall Office for Mac, then reinstall it from the Services & subscriptions section of your Microsoft account.

Hope this could help. Feel free to post back if you need any further clarification or assistance!
