"let's prove your human" hold the button test not working

My personal account has been locked because of unusual activity (the cause of which i'm still not sure of) and the test to prove that I'm human isn't working. I was directed to prove that I'm human using the press and hold button test following the notification that my account has been locked. I have performed this on both my laptop and my phone and it hasn't worked on either - eventually it came up on my phone saying that this service isn't working properly and that I need to try again later. I need access to my email today.

I could not find any info on this issue on the Microsoft website and to receive any help i have to sign in with my account that I can't sign into! To send this message I have had to sign in through another email account of mine that fortunately happens to be an Outlook account.

I came off my wifi and onto my data on my phone and this fixed the issue.

    Hello Rpat,

Thank you for sharing the update. I’m glad to hear that switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data helped you complete the verification and regain access.

This information may also help other users who see the “let’s prove you’re human” hold-the-button verification not working, as trying a different network can sometimes allow the verification process to complete.

Thank you again for posting the solution.

The “let’s prove you’re human”/press-and-hold test is part of Microsoft’s automated protection when an Outlook.com/Microsoft account is temporarily blocked for unusual activity. When that human-check or its backend service fails, the only supported options are to use the automated unblock/sign-in tools, switch network/device, and wait out temporary blocks.

    Use the official unblock/sign-in helper

    1. Go to the Outlook.com unblock page and start the helper:
    2. Follow the prompts to sign in with the locked account and complete the verification (code or other method) instead of relying only on the “press and hold” test.
    3. If the helper cannot unblock the account, use the link it provides to go to When you can't sign in to your Microsoft account for further automated recovery.

Try different method/network and avoid repeated attempts

    1. If a specific verification method (like SMS or a particular device) is failing, switch to another method (alternate email, different phone, or Microsoft Authenticator if configured). This is recommended when a specific method is blocked or malfunctioning.
    2. Switch networks (e.g., from home Wi‑Fi to mobile data or another Wi‑Fi). Some blocks are tied to suspicious traffic from a given network or region.
    3. Avoid repeated, rapid attempts. Excessive or repetitive verification attempts can trigger or extend a temporary block. If the system shows errors like “service isn’t working properly,” wait at least 24 hours before trying again, and up to a week if blocks persist.

If verification codes are not arriving If the unblock flow asks for a code instead of the press-and-hold test and codes don’t arrive:

    • Confirm the code is being sent to the correct phone/email and check junk folders for messages from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
    • Ensure the phone can receive SMS (no VOIP numbers, inbox not full, unknown-number blocking disabled).
    • If using another Microsoft email as the alternate address, sign into that alternate email in a private/incognito browser window so both accounts can stay signed in while copying the code.

If still blocked or no codes

    1. Use the sign-in helper for general sign-in issues: Sign-in helper.
    2. If still stuck, contact Microsoft Support using any account that can sign in (such as the second Outlook account already in use):
      • Go to Contact Microsoft Support from the verification-code troubleshooting article.
      • Enter the problem and select Get Help, then choose Contact Support to reach a support option.

Note: Support agents cannot send verification codes or directly change security details; all access decisions are enforced by the automated systems. If the system indicates a temporary block or asks to wait, that waiting period must complete before another attempt.
