I cannot login to my business account to change the password

When I set up a business standard microsoft 365 account I must have made a mistake. I have a family subscription and a business standard (work and school) subscription. I am trying to migrate my 365 world to the business account but cannot login to the business account. The self-support loop of microsoft is a living hell.

How to I get microsoft to give me admin rights on my business account?

Hi @Shaun Neuhoff

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how frustrating this experience can be, especially when you're trying to consolidate your Microsoft 365 setup and are blocked from accessing your Business account. I’ll try to clarify how this works and guide you on the next steps.

When you purchase a Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription, a new tenant and administrator account is created during the setup process. This account is automatically granted Global Admin rights for that tenant.

Here are a few things you can check:

  • Please verify if you created an account with @yourdomain.onmicrosoft.com format this is typically your admin account.
  • Check your Microsoft Authenticator app, as the account used during setup is usually registered there for MFA verification.

Since you mentioned that you cannot log in, this indicates an authentication or account access issue, not a missing admin role.

To better understand your situation, could you please help clarify:

  • What exact error message or prompt do you see when trying to log in?
  • Are you being asked for a verification code (MFA), and do you still have access to the device or method used during setup?
  • Do you recall the admin username (especially the onmicrosoft.com account)?

If you are unable to access the account at all and you are the only administrator, this will require assistance from Microsoft’s Data Protection team to verify your identity and recover access.

Please note that forum moderators do not have access to user accounts, tenant data, or backend systems (including admin role assignment or login recovery), as these are protected by strict privacy and security policies.

Thank you again for your time and understanding.

I really appreciate your patience, and I’m here to help. Looking forward to your response.
