Azure Backup of Virtual Machine fails because resource no longer exists - but it does

I've just realised the backups for one of our Windows Virtual Machines have been failing for the last months. It says the VM no longer exists but it 100% does - VM is up and running, I can see it with my very own eyes. I've tried stopping the protection then resuming, but it failed again. I've tried creating another Service Recovery vault, but I can assign the backup of this VM as it's already assign to the existing vault. The backups for the other VMs (each one has a different vault) are ok. Any ideas?

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. In the end I found out that there was a disk left over from a deleted storage account (VM has unmanaged disks, so they are stored in a storage account). Hence the error message was misleading (the VM did exist) but the error code "resourcenotfound" was a clue - only the resource not found was not the VM itself but a part of the VM.

Deleting this disk solved the issue.

Hope this helps to anyone with the same issue.

    Hello @Anonymous ,
Thank you for reaching out to us!

The issue could be that the VM Agent is unresponsive.
Being so, we will need to update the guest agent by following the steps:
    Reinstall the Windows Guest agent:
    a. Determine whether the Windows Guest Agent service is running in the VM services (services.msc). Try to restart the Windows Guest Agent service and confirm if it’s running.
    b. If the Windows Guest Agent service isn't visible in services, in Control Panel, go to Programs and Features to determine whether the Windows Guest Agent service is installed.
    c. If the Windows Guest Agent appears in Programs and Features, uninstall the Windows Guest Agent.
    d. Download and install the latest version of the agent MSI.
You must have Administrator rights to complete the installation.
    e. Verify that the Windows Guest Agent services appear in services.
    f. Reboot the VM.

Please let me know when these steps have been performed so we can monitor the backups.

Also do not hesitate in reaching out if you have any further questions or concerns regarding this.
