What are Power BI samples

Use these ready-made samples, reports, and datasets to explore Power BI hands-on. This article lists downloadable .pbix and .pbit files, Excel workbooks, and SQL sample databases. Each entry includes a direct download link and a link to an article that explains the data model, visuals, and techniques.

Sample file overview

Use these samples to try features, prototype reports, validate scenarios, or jumpstart your own projects. Follow the instructions to open them in Power BI Desktop or upload them to the Power BI service.

The samples in this article are available in multiple formats, but two common ways to get started are with .pbix and .xlsx files:

.pbix: A Power BI Desktop report file that contains the report pages, data model, queries, and visuals. Download a .pbix when you want to open a complete report directly in Power BI Desktop and explore or modify both the visual layer and the underlying model.
.xlsx: An Excel workbook that contains the sample data. Use the .xlsx files as a data source in Power BI Desktop or when editing a semantic model in the Power BI service.

To explore a sample in Power BI Project (PBIP) format, open the sample in Power BI Desktop and save it as a project. For more information, see Power BI Desktop projects (PBIP).

Use a sample .pbix file

Some samples are available as Power BI .pbix files. The .pbix files are designed to be used with Power BI Desktop.

Select a .pbix link from the table to download the sample file.
In Power BI Desktop, select File > Open, navigate to the location where you saved the sample .pbix file, and select the .pbix file to open it in Power BI Desktop.

Use a sample .xlsx file

Some of the built-in samples are also available as an Excel workbook. To download an Excel sample file, find the sample you want in the sample files table later in this article and select the .xlsx link.

Tip

Download not starting? If the file doesn't download automatically when you select the link, try right-clicking the link and selecting Save link as or Save target as. For GitHub-hosted files, selecting the link takes you to the GitHub page. Select the Download raw file button (down arrow icon) to download the file.

After you download the file, use it as a data source in Power BI Desktop or when editing a semantic model in the Power BI service.

Explore the refreshed 2026 Power BI samples

Several samples were refreshed to pair modern report design with stronger semantic models. Download the 2026 Power BI samples refresh from GitHub and open the .pbix files in Power BI Desktop.

The refresh includes the following reports:

AdventureWorks Sales: Adds a dark theme, donut center values, series labels, Azure Maps, and the date picker for compact calendar, range, and relative-date filtering.
Artificial Intelligence: Brings AI visuals together, including Key influencers, the Decomposition tree, and anomaly detection in line charts.
Competitive Marketing Analysis: Highlights the new card visual, donut center values, smooth line styling, Azure Maps, and conditional formatting.
Corporate Spend: Uses conditional formatting, a button slicer, informative card reference labels, and field parameters for a more adaptive experience.
Employee Hiring and History: Uses color, line and marker styles, custom tooltip text, and conditional formatting to direct attention to key workforce trends.
Regional Sales: Adds the larger canvas, the new card visual, page navigation, a Shape Map, and fixed-width improvements for table and matrix visuals.
Revenue Opportunities: Combines a Shape Map with a report page tooltip and a combo chart to add context for pipeline analysis.
Store Sales: Applies the modern base theme, larger canvas, and a mobile-optimized layout consistent with the other refreshed reports.

Stronger semantic models

The refreshed samples include updated semantic models that:

Rename tables, columns, and measures to clearly convey their purpose.
Add concise descriptions to guide report authors.
Create measures for common analysis, such as win percentage and high backorder risk.
Apply consistent display formats for decimals, currencies, and dates.
Configure sort-by columns so categories appear in the expected order.
Hide technical columns that the model requires but aren't intended for report authoring.
Validate default summarization settings for columns.
Review relationships for active status, filter direction, and cardinality.
Add calculation groups where reusable patterns, such as inactive relationships and period comparisons, make sense.

Modern report design

The updated report pages:

Apply the latest base theme from the Theme pane and use the larger default canvas.
Add mobile-optimized layouts so each sample includes a purposeful phone experience.
Add report page tooltips where they provide helpful detail.
Replace visuals that are no longer recommended, including Bing Maps and the Q&A visual.
Reduce shapes and text boxes by using built-in padding, titles, and subtitles.
Consolidate groups of individual cards into the new card visual.
Use newer visuals and capabilities, such as the date picker and button slicer.
