OneNote for iPad & iPhone connecting to SharePoint, Office 365 & SkyDrive Pro

I have seen a few people comment about connecting to SharePoint notebooks in OneNote for iPad & iPhone (iOS).  The app fully supports on-prem SharePoint 2010 & higher, Office 365 notebooks and SkyDrive Pro notebooks and I wanted to spend sometime explaining how you can get those notebooks open in OneNote.  Now you need to make sure that you have a connection to your server and for on-prem that means you would need to VPN first.  Additionally if you have some complex form of auth on your server then this might not work with the mobile client put in a comment below if you are facing issues!

 

OneNote hyperlinks - just click on the link

People often will send links to notebooks & content in notebook with a OneNote hyperlink (onenote:) which will call OneNote and then it will open your notebook.  This is how you do this:

  1. Go to OneNote
  2. Right-click on the notebook and choose copy hyperlink to this notebook
  3. Paste this into an email to yourself  or paste it into a notebook which you have open in OneNote on your device
  4. Go to your device to where you had that hyperlink
  5. Tap on the hyperlink (make sure it isn't the web link)
  6. OneNote will open and then maybe ask you for a password
  7. Notebook should open just fine

This is the preferred way and I think the easiest so if you can send yourself a hyperlink I highly suggest that you do this.

 

iPad: Opening from OneNote

If you are running OneNote on and iPad you can also open a notebook directly from SharePoint by adding your SharePoint to OneNote, just follow these steps:

  1. Open OneNote
  2. Tap on the back arrow in the top left
  3. Tap on Open
  4. Tap on Add a Place
  5. Then choose SharePoint URL and type the name of your SharePoint site and subsite if you know it.
  6. Enter your username & password
  7. Then your SharePoint sites will show up under a SharePoint place, and then you can navigate through the site to find your notebook

 

Opening from Office Mobile for iPhone

If you are on an iPhone and an Office 365 subscriber you can navigate to your SharePoint site from there and tap on a notebook to launch OneNote.

 

Opening directly from SharePoint/Office 365

If you are running SharePoint 2013 or higher you can navigate to the SharePoint site in the browser and from the mobile site you can directly click on the notebook and it will launch OneNote.

If you are on an iPad you can go into the OneNote Web App and click on "Open in OneNote" and it will launch OneNote, note that this requires the most recent version of the web apps and I believe this is only available on Office 365 at the current time. 

If you are on SharePoint 2010 you would not be able to do this : (

    When connecting to our onprem SharePoint 2010 notebook with the new OneNote for iPad, it just keeps telling me the username or password is incorrect.  I can get to the notebook/web app just fine with Safari browser from the same iPad though.

    The iphone app definitely needs improving - login with Sharepoint online, integration with Skydrive pro...

    Chris - Sorry to hear this...if you send yourself a hyperlink from the OneNote client on Windows can you click on that hyperlink on the iPad?  Does it open there?

    First off, I love the new OneNote for the iPad.  Really nicely done! My question: We have some large corporate Onenote notebooks with many attached PDF and PPT files.  I would like to be able to open them on the iPad for customer visits.  Is there a way to open attachments in OneNote for iPad?  If not, will it be able available soon?

    Is the Android app also supposed to be able to open SkyDrive Pro notebooks? I'm going to try this now, but it seems like an absurdly convoluted way to access the notebooks. Why not at least let us bookmark a notebook URL in the app?

    Would also like to know if there are plans for allowing us to open attached files in notes on the iPad. I can do this on Android but not on iPad. So many attachments and yet they are just 'pictures' of the file type.

    When you add a SharePoint URL, it keeps telling me to add a valid URL on iPad. I have tried even clicking the link to one note by sending the link thru email.. Nothing works...I can however access the same URL using safari browser and get to it without any issues...the SharePoint is externally hosted and can be access from anywhere...

    I'm having the same issue as Chris, I can get to the extranet hosted SharePoint 2010 site, but the iPad app is telling me I have an incorrect username or password.

    SkyDrive Pro sites don't show up. The default site is there, but not any other sites.

    Trying to connect to mysite onenote files with my iPad. I keep getting an error message after my login (namuser_id) and password ... "Looks like you do not have enough permissions to browse notebooks at this location. Please try entering a full path to the notebook's location." Anyone get past this?

    Hi daniel, We are using SharePoint 2010, in which each user (approx 1200) is using the mysite to store their personal documents. Next to the personal document we are also using SharePlus on iPads. So the next challenge we have is to create a OneNote file on the mysite, and this notebook to be opened from our iPads.     Hi Daniel, Same type of issue here when using an on-premise installation of Sharepoint 2010 to host the One Note .onepkg container. For some reason it will not open. We use a TMG reversed proxy to acces a WebDav fileshare. intra.ourcompany.com/.../onenote If i read the instructions carefully, it should be able to use this type of location to share the OneNote database. Because of privacy-issues  we do not authorize personel to store databases and such "in the Cloud". So SkyDrive and Office 365 are no options for us. Kind regards, Robin.

    I have a edu skydrive pro. I can use skydrive pro and  Lync but onenote wont accept user name and password. Wants ms account and I need to use EDU account

    Hi, I tried to connect from ipads onenote application to our company sharepoint, but it doesn't work. Our company sharepoint works over https. When I paste such a link onenote reported an error message that i should use a valid sharepoint link. Can you help me with this? Thank you best regards Kris

I can browse the directory structure, but I don't see any of my .One files. If I point directly to the file, the iPad suggests that it can't open that type of file. Nothing I do seems to work, despite having followed the directions TO THE LETTER This is really bad, since we don't trust data on the cloud and installed our own on-premise solution for this very reason.

    On-premise solution - many ask no one answer

There are several comments here that there is login/password problem with corporate SharePoint. I have the same problem. If Microsoft thinks that eventually complainers will switch to the cloud... They would NOT. I will wait for on-premise working solution for ever (or I will find an alternative eventually). No opt to put data in the cloud (at least data which is not encrypted by my private key on my device).

    It appears that MS requires an Office 365 subscription to connect the iPad app to a OneNote file stored on an ON-PREMESIS SharePoint server! How utterly ridiculous! If MS is not going to fully support SharePoint on-prem, it should refund our license fees.

    We have 2013 onprem and using SAML authentication.  One note will open fine in Office Web apps, but clicking on open in onenote link in the browser will cause onenote app to start, and then prompt for saml credentials, and then error: Cannot Open Link  There's a problem with this link

    Thanks, this worked for me.  A bit strange and it connected up straight away with my Nexus 7 without going through this rubbish, but not with my Galaxy S3.

    Daniel, I do have the same problem Chris has. I did what you suggested, I sent myself the hyperlink and I can open it in my tablet.

    I am trying to open a NoteBook that is stored on sharepoint 2010 and I can access the sharepoint site via safari and see the notbook icons but when i click ion the "open Notebook" icon it starts onenote app but then syas that the file is not a onenote file...the file has an extension .onetoc2 also the function described in Open OneNote Tap on the back arrow in the top left Tap on Open Tap on Add a Place Then choose SharePoint URL and type the name of your SharePoint site and subsite if you know it. Enter your username & password does not seam to be correct anymore as there is no more back arrow in the top left and I have found a link to open notebooks but it only gives me the option of OneDrive and no possibility to actually enter a URL...

    Our school division has both Prem SharePoint 2013 and Office 365.  I have installed OneNote on my iPad, but can only get OneNote notebooks stored in O365 to open in the local app.  I can get to web versions of the prem SharePoint notebooks, but I would like to work on them, and have them show up in my list of notebooks, on the actual iPad app. Unlike the computer web app version of OneNote where there is a link to open in full OneNote, on my iPad I see no option to open in my iPad OneNote. What I think I need to do is to connect the prem SharePoint to my iPad app, but I can find no way to add that in addition to the O365 connection.

    Is OneNote for iPad supported with Forms Based Authentication (FBA)? My customer has SharePoint 2013 On-premises and Office Web Apps. Initially, iPhone users could navigate to a SP library with a OneNote doc and open it in the OneNote Web App, then click "Open in OneNote" and it would open in OneNote for iPad. This stopped working when we changed to Forms Based Authentication. All other features of SharePoint are working OK with FBA but when iPad users open the OneNote Web App and click "Open in OneNote", they just get a blank page. Is this configuration supported?

    Hi Daniel, I have a quick question regarding One Note and SharePoint, if you could help me it would be awesome: I'm experiencing issues with OneNote where the Notebook is stored in SharePoint environment. Then we have protected sections on it. The thing is, everytime the OneNote file is closed, every single password has to be entered again. I've already disabled the options to forget passwords on the Advanced settings tab, but they keep disappearing - my guess? Other users sync the notebook with unopened (still protected) sections and this "disables" the section for others, requiring them to put the password again. Does anyone know a fix for this issue?     I can't find a way, on my iPad to access anything except OneDrive.  I need to be able to access our on-prem SharePoint.  I can't get anyone at MS to answer.
