A Quick Reference Sheet for Internet Explorer 7

My name is Seth McLaughlin and I have been working as a Program Manager intern on the User Experience team for the past few months. The summer is coming to an end and I will soon be returning to school at the Rochester Institute of Technology.  Before I go, I wanted to let you know about a new resource that’s available for all of you keyboard lovers out there.

There are many great shortcuts in IE7 - two of my favorites are CTRL+E to quickly access the Search box and ALT+D to select the Address bar. Shortcuts are wonderful things and once you start using them you will quickly begin to wonder how you ever lived without them. But how do you discover these shortcuts? And what if you forget them?

You could refer to Aaron’s post from last winter that described some of the old and new shortcuts available in IE7. Or, you might spend a few minutes searching through Help (haven’t used Help before? Just press F1!). These resources are great, but can be difficult to access during the key moment when you are trying to remember a shortcut.  Alternatively, maybe you need to remember how to change tab settings, or perform another common task within the browser. Again, looking through Help can be time consuming and not really necessary if you just need a quick piece of information.

Enter the Internet Explorer 7 Quick Reference Sheet! We’ve created this sheet to bring together keyboard shortcuts and directions for common tasks in one, easy to access location. Rather than provide an exhaustive listing of ALL the IE shortcuts (there are a lot!), we focused on outlining only the ones that perform the most popular actions within the browser. Limiting the scope in this way allowed us to create a document that can be printed on a single page of paper, which you can keep handy near your computer as you browse the web.

    Wouldn't it be great if someone could give you a "to do" list when you were ready to start your company that would guarantee your success? Even better, what about a "to don't" list of things to avoid at all costs?     CTRL + L should take you to the Location bar... the fact that this is still wrong, is very anoying!

    So, if this is RC... then can you update the IE Feedback site, so we can start logging agaisnt IE  final, and submit PRs and CRs for IE8?

    I wasn't very impressed that most feedback was ignored, but if we can start entering it for release with IE8, hopefully MS will have enough time to implement the fixes.

    @Fduch:

    True, but I'm an eternal optimist... from the chats and blogs, my "interpretation" is that Chris and team, want to fix IE big time... but they have to get IE7 out the door... in time for Vista... after which, the real development will occur. (E.g. support for W3C DOM features, better JS support, full PNG support, fixing all the bugs with forms, CSS selectors and such)

    As a Web Developer, that uses^H^H^H^H has clients that use IE, i'm in need of serious support for the modern technologies out there.  Right now, IE is the lowest common denominator... I can build super cool stuff, but end up having to degrade to deal with IE... I hope, that MS makes a huge effort after IE7, to really wow the market, users & developers.  At the moment, it isn't too exciting, because home users have used Firefox for months/years, but are stuck with IE at work.  Once IE7 is installed office wide, we can start dropping support for IE6 (oh boy I can't wait for that day!)

    Rant over... I just hope they do some real fixing for IE8.

    Steve: ALT+D has always worked, so it's silly to say that CTRL+L is "right".

    Strafford: Just drag them to the tab title instead.

    Tihiy: Who cares about bitmaps inside the DLL?  That's just silly.

    Please consider updating this QR with shortcuts that are new to IE7, and those that work in old versions.  I do not understand how the CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER works from the description given.  Where/how do you specify the suffix, and can the suffix be compound (such as "homepages.web")?

    Please include the Quick Reference Sheet in the IE7 help file, make it a quick click to bring up a pdf version of it so it can be printed.

    Haven't tried RC1 yet, but in the previous version of IE7 the "Organize Favorites" was a  horrifying joke.  

    It SHOULD simply invoke Windows Explorer, pointing to the correct location for the current users Favorites folder.  

    Instead, it has some kind of half-baked interface that is even less well done thant the one in IE6 if that's imaginable.

    @baillard: Please see the "Change website address suffix*" section under Common Tasks within the Quick Reference Sheet.

    Here are some more detailed instructions:

    1. Click the Tools menu.
    2. Click Internet Options (at the very bottom of the Tools menu).
    3. Click Languages (button near bottom of Internet Options window).
    4. At the very bottom right of the Language Preference window you will see a textfield. This is where you enter your custom suffix (for example "homepages.web").

    Then simply click Ok to apply the change. Now, when you enter WORD in the Address Bar and press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER, you will be directed to "http://www.WORD.homepages.web".

    why does my CPU usage increase to 100% when I log into Windows Live Local? IE7 also freezes in the process...

    Can this bug be fixed?

    why are my videos not playing using windows media player on all of the video sites out there?  this was also the case when i downloaded the beta awhile ago and quickly uninstalled it.  i can't get any videos to actually play (i.e. www.break.com).

    ALT+D with German IE7 beta3 brings up the file menu titled "_D_atei" and does nothing with the address bar.  As the German IE7 RC1 is not out yet, I can't try it there.

    So, is there a different shortcut in the German version?  Looking into the help is not helpful as it is still in English.

    @Stefan: Yes, I'd imagine that the Accelerator key is localized for the German build.  

    A quick search suggests "The German version of Internet Explorer requires ALT-S".

    No I don't have any plug-in's or toolbars installed. And when I start IE in 'no addons mode', the problem still occurs.

    I hope you could help out, because I sincerely thought this build of IE7 would fix the bug but it didn't so yeah...it caused me to be upset...partially.

    It's lovely, but please add some padding to boxes, it'd be much better when text doesn't stick to borders.

    Thanks for the ref sheet, very useful. Would it be difficult to implement a feature where you could type "shortcuts" in the searchbar and select "IE Help" from the search providers and it would jump to the shortcuts help page? Just a thought... Might be a bit late now you're in RC1 :(

    Where is the shortcut for opening IE at?  I thought it used to be <WindowsKey>+[I], but it hasn't worked in a while.  Would be nice too if FireFox was <WindowsKey>+[F], hint, hint.  Also would like to see an alternate to the prefix setting where I can map both .net and .org to different shortcuts, like [ctrl]+[shift]+[enter] and [ctrl]+[alt]+[enter].

    The new Quick Reference sheet looks great. I'd like to suggest that you offer it as a OneNote document as well.  I tried using the Send to OneNote feature from IE7 Beta3 and it came over fine, but all of your nice formatting was all messed up.  Being able to pull the sheet up in OneNote would be a great asset as I'd have it with me everywhere I traveled with my TabletPC.

    IE 7 is a nice browser, congrats.

    But yes, I also think Control-L is the big missing shortcut, it's really useful if implemented. It should set focus to the address bar. Alt-D misses the point of having standard shortcuts, and IE 6's implementation of control-L (opening the file dialog) is far less useful and doesn't have the control-enter stuff.

    @EricLaw: It's not Alt-S either.  This will do the same as pressing the small down arrow next to the home symbol on the toolbar.

    In the German IE7 beta3 Alt-E highlights the whole URL string.  Is this what is supposed to happen when I use Alt-D in the English version?

    It would be nice to be able to make the change the default page for a new tab to point to this quick refence.  Is there a way to customize which page is displayed for a new blank tabe.

    Yes, the hotkey for the address bar selects all of the text in it.

    @Shane: You can set the quickreference as your homepage and then configure the new tab command to open that homepage.

    @Francis: It's basically impossible to be "consistent" with a large legacy set of hotkeys, other browsers (a common request) and all other Microsoft products.  

    F6 moves between frames and chrome, as it always has.  There's no way that we could change this without confusing lots of folks.  

    CTRL+* on the number pad returns to 100%.  Laptops don't tend to have an easily accessible number pad, and on most numeric keypads, the existence of numlock makes 0 a poor choice, because sometimes "0" isn't "0".  Hence, *.

    In Office, if you open a document and choose "Save", it saves it where it was opened from.  IE doesn't work like that, and hence Save As is more appropriate.

    When IE7 is used as an embedded viewer (rendering engine), there's no way to increase tiny fonts -- apart from zooming, which is not always desirable since the page can then start to disappear off the sides of the monitor.

    Some such products are MMC (management console) and the recently-relleased Windows Desktop Search 3.0, as well as quite a few non-Microsoft products. They don't have even IE7's very-hard-to-quickly-get-at menus for altering text size, so you finished up stuck with tiny, illegible text or zooming (and the latter might work satisfactoril in some cases but not others). When will user interface designers at Microsoft take Text Size (not zooming) into account.

    In IE6 you used to be able to use Ctrl+Mousewheel for altering Text Size, but IE7 took over this key binding for zooming and woefully neglected to replace it with anything else. Well, even that's not entirely true: for the short lifespane of IE7 Beta2 you could use Ctrl+Shift+Mousewheel for changing text size, but in Beta 3 even this new key binding was given over to [horizontal] panning.

    So it must be relatively easy for these key bindings to be changed, if it can appear in Beta2 then be changed to something else in Beta3. I just can't understand why you carelessly decided to dump this handy function, instead of the simply assigning yet another spare binding to it (say, Alt+Mousewheel, or something similar).

    If it's so easy to do, then you;ve got time to put it back in before RTM.

    Over the last 2 weeks since updating my system (XP, IE 7), my system does not shut down half the time, it simply hangs...  I have found no rhyme no reason, it just hangs...

    suggestions?

    EricLaw: I believe you misread one of my comments.

    I suggested that CTRL+F6 (not plain, unmodified F6) be reinstated as an additional shortcut for "next tab" (and, by extension, SHIFT+CTRL+F6.) At present, CTRL+F6 does nothing in IE7.

    Tabbed browsing is simply a new spin on MDI. CTRL+F6 has been the keyboard shortcut for "next window" since at least Windows 3.0.

    I completely agree with Tony Austin about this text resizing issue. I just downloaded the release candidate and I am furious that they have removed the CTRL + SHIFT + Mouse Wheel binding.
