Release notes for Semi-Annual Channel releases in 2017

These release notes provide information about new features, security updates, and nonsecurity updates that are included in Semi-Annual Channel updates to Office 365 ProPlus in 2017.

Note

  • The following also provides information about new features, security updates, and nonsecurity updates for Visio Pro for Office 365 and Project Online Desktop Client.
  • This information also applies to Office 365 Business, which is the version of Office that comes with some Office 365 plans, such as Business Premium.
  • Semi-Annual Channel was named Deferred Channel prior to January 2018.

  • What’s New dialog: A dialog box that highlights new Access features appears when Access is opened after Access is updated with new features. The dialog box is also available by going to File > Account > What’s New.
  • Large Number (bigint) support: Use the Large Number data type in Access tables to calculate large numbers, and to link to or import from external databases that use an equivalent data type, such as bigint in SQL Server. More information

Excel: Feature updates

  • Windows Information Protection (WIP) support:   Excel is now an enlightened app, and can differentiate between corporate and personal data, correctly determining which to protect, based on configured policies.  More information
  • Get & Transform improvement: In the Query Editor, create a new column by providing sample values. As you type, Excel detects the required transformations and shows a preview of the new column.
  • Insert recent links: Easily attach hyperlinks to recent cloud-based files or websites, and create meaningful display names for people using screen readers. More information
  • Personalize the default PivotTable layout: Set up a PivotTable the way you like, and start with that layout every time you create a new PivotTable. More information
  • Get & Transform improvements: Users can create new columns by example and split table columns into rows. Specifying parameters to SAP HANA and grouping data is now easier.
  • Centralized deployment of add-ins: Admins can deploy and update add-ins to users or groups from the Office 365 admin center.
  • Quick Access Toolbar customization: The Subscript and Superscript icons can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar.
  • Get & Transform improvements: Automatic detection of delimiter character when splitting columns using the Query Editor, choose which sample file to use with Combine Binaries, and specify the package collection to connect to when using the DB2 Connector.
  • Dubai font: Font family that supports both Western European languages and the major languages that use the Arabic script. More information
  • Background removal: Remove a picture background with a free-form drawing tool.
  • Get & Transform improvements: Use “Select Related Tables” in the Navigator dialog with the ODCB and OLEDB connectors, combine multiple files directly from the folder Data Preview dialog, and use a new context menu option in the Query Editor window to insert new steps in existing queries.
  • Use a pen to select and change objects: Grab object handles with a digital pen to resize, rotate, move, and more.
  • Map Chart: Compare values and show categories across geographic regions. More information
  • SVG images: Insert and edit scalable vector graphics (SVG) in workbooks. More information
  • Insert icons:  Use icons from a standard library of scalable vector graphics (SVG) files by going to Insert > Illustrations > Icons. More information
  • Save to Recent folders: Save a workbook to a recently used folder by using the Recent tab when you go to File > Save As.
  • Accessibility improvements: Improved support for using the keyboard, Narrator, and other assistive technology to read and edit workbooks.

Excel: Nonsecurity updates

  • Fix issues with copying and pasting into Excel, such as ignoring tab-separated HTML text, incorrectly removing empty rows and columns, ignoring alignment, and ignoring formulas.
  • Fix an issue where errors appear when trying to save changes to documents synchronized with the OneDrive client.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes when adding worksheet data to a Data Model and the High Contrast theme is set to Black.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes for workbooks that contain external links.
  • Fix an issue where pasting cells from Excel to Word shows zeros in the cells, even though the "Show a zero in cells that have zero value" setting is not selected.
  • Fix an issue where Excel doesn't set the sheet protection password when applied programmatically for workbooks created in Excel 2010 or earlier.
  • Fix an issue where Merge & Center doesn't work in grouped worksheets.
  • Fix an issue where new functions that were introduced after the release of Office 2016 - for example, TEXTJOIN, CONCAT, IFS, MAXIFS, and MINIFS - are missing.
  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes when the user attempts to apply cell level permissions.
  • Fix an issue where saving a large file to OneDrive for Business causes the file to be locked and the user can't edit the file until the user closes and reopens Excel.
  • Fix an issue where a new window appears grayed out when an .xls workbook is opened.
  • Fix an issue where Excel might crash when inserting hyperlinks.
  • Fix an issue where Excel might fail when adding XML Maps.
  • Fix an issue where the command button for an Add-in doesn't work after the add-in is upgraded or after removing and downloading the Add-in again from the Office store.

  • Fix an issue where Excel crashes when selecting a form control combo box on a chart sheet.

OneNote: Feature updates

  • Windows Information Protection (WIP) support: OneNote is now an enlightened app, and can differentiate between corporate and personal data, correctly determining which to protect, based on configured policies. More information

OneNote: Nonsecurity updates

  • Add a property to allow pages to be set to read-only, which is also provided in the information bar.
  • Fix an issue where the OneNote canvas hides content or updates when many paragraphs are in view.

Outlook: Feature updates

  • Windows Information Protection (WIP) support:   Outlook is now an enlightened app, and can differentiate between corporate and personal data, correctly determining which to protect, based on configured policies.  More information
  • Insert recent links: Attach hyperlinks to recent cloud-based files or websites, and create meaningful display names for people using screen readers. More information
  • Dubai font: Font family that supports both Western European languages and the major languages that use the Arabic script. More information
  • Background removal: Remove a picture background with a free-form drawing tool.
  • Check access to shared files: Outlook tells the user ahead of time if recipients may not be able to access an attached OneDrive or SharePoint file, and suggests how to fix the issue.
  • Set permissions on attachments: For OneDrive or SharePoint attachments, the user can set whether recipients, in the organization or externally, have read or edit permissions to the attachment.
  • Pinnable taskpane: Leave the add-in taskpane open while switching between messages in a mailbox. More information

  • Attachment widths expand visually to fit the file name and permission information.
  • Fix an issue where the user can't search PST files.
  • Fix an issue where the user sees a new "Microsoft Exchange" store type in the "New Outlook Data File" dialog, and selecting this new data type causes the user's profile to become unusable.
  • Fix an issue where an image in a message is blacked out when sent from a computer using High DPI.

  • Save to Recent folders: Save a presentation to a recently used folder by using the Recent tab when you go to File > Save As.
  • Create precise ink shapes: Drag the Segment Eraser to remove excess bits of ink, right up to the nearest line.
  • Select and manipulate objects with a pen: Use a digital pen to move, resize, or rotate objects using their handles, or use supported pen buttons to Lasso Select ink.
  • Accessibility improvements: Improved support for using the keyboard, Narrator, and other assistive technology to read and edit presentations.

PowerPoint: Security updates

PowerPoint: Nonsecurity updates

  • Fix an issue where end-user defined characters (EUDCs) that are linked to fonts fail to display.
  • Fix an issue where adding a shape after another user changes the layout causes a merge failure.
  • Fix an issue where PowerPoint crashes when the user is in the Design Ideas pane if the mfplat.dll file isn't installed on the computer.
  • Fix an issue where the command button for an Add-in doesn't work after the add-in is upgraded or after removing and downloading the Add-in again from the Office store.

Project: Feature updates

  • Quick drop-down for setting predecessors: Use the Gantt chart drop-down to choose which predecessors or successors you want to link to a task.
  • Task Summary Name:  Read-only task field that shows the name of the task’s summary task.  

Project: Nonsecurity updates

  • Fix an issue where values that are selected for a chart/table aren't visible in the chart/table pane.
  • Fix the Create Project Site dialog to show the correct location for the site now that in Project Online each Enterprise Project Template (EPT) will have its own URL for project sites.
  • Fix an issue where the VBA BeforeClose event fires before the Save prompt and you don't have a programmatic way to determine the user's response to the save prompt.
  • Fix an issue where Physical % Complete doesn't roll up correctly for tasks starting after the project status date.
  • Fix an issue when a cost and work resource is assigned to the same task, you may not be able to change the task's status manager.
  • Fix an issue where for certain projects, leveling the entire project can leave you in an endless loop.
  • Fix an issue where task start and finish dates don't synchronize to a SharePoint tasks list correctly if you have certain Spanish regional settings.
  • Fix an issue where if you initiate the status approvals process from the Project client, it may never finish, leaving the project in an unusable state.
  • Fix an issue where print preview doesn't layout task names correctly if you have Chinese and English words.
  • Fix an issue where copying the timeline into PowerPoint as individual shapes doesn't work.
  • Fix an issue where the "Links Between Projects" dialog unexpectedly displays the value "File Not Found."
  • Fix an issue you get inconsistent results when assigning resources with Max Units of 0.
  • Fix an issue where a task's start date gets reset to As Soon As Possible when deleting an assignment's start date, ignoring things like predecessors, which leads to leading splits on assignments.
  • Fix an issue where if you open a file from SharePoint via the Recent menu, the project is automatically checked out to you even if the setting "Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited?" is enabled.
  • Fix an issue where if you go directly to the Project Profiles application, Project crashes.
  • Fix an issue where manually scheduled tasks are not updated correctly for users upgrading from Project 2013.
  • Fix an issue where when opening a project from a SharePoint task list, Project may crash as Project starts the task synchronization process.

  • Fix an issue where copying and pasting tasks carries over the baseline data and the data is saved, even though the user isn't permitted to save protected baseline data.
  • Fix an issue where importing data from Excel results in incorrect date information for tasks and assignments.
  • Fix an issue where, after opening a report, Project crashes when closing.
  • Fix an issue where Project stops working when saving a project where a custom list contains validation settings.
  • Fix an issue where entering the ">" character in the Test column in the Filter Definition dialog isn't correctly interpreted as meaning "is greater than."

  • Fix an issue where the drop-down list of field names doesn't appear when customizing filters.

Publisher: Nonsecurity updates

  • Fix an issue where Publisher doesn’t display CMYK TIF images.

Skype for Business: Feature updates

  • Insert link: Add a link into IM and group chats and provide friendly text for the link instead of the full URL.
  • Screen sharing notification: A notification displays in the conversation window when you’re sharing a screen in an IM conversation or when screen sharing continues after you leave a meeting. The notification reminds you that you are still sharing your screen and makes it easy to stop sharing by using the “Stop Sharing” button.
  • Windows Information Protection (WIP) support: Skype for Business is now supported as a WIP-work only app.  By adding Skype to your allowed apps list, it indicates to Windows that it does not handle personal data.  Windows protects data on behalf of Skype for Business.  More information
  • Password reset option: A reset button link appears on the sign in window when a user fails to sign in at least once.

Skype for Business: Nonsecurity updates

  • Fix an issue where the meeting link from Outlook doesn't always pass internal URI properly.
  • Widened the Meeting Join button to fix truncation of some localized languages.
  • Change message for attempted calls to users with audio disabled by policy from "Cannot complete the call" to "Cannot call because an IT administrator has restricted audio. Try using instant messaging or email instead and ask to check with their IT administrator."
  • Add a "Forgot your dial-in PIN" hyperlink to meeting invites of PSTN Conferencing enabled users for Skype for Business Online.
  • Enable Teams meeting join from Skype for Business Online.
  • Change the default loudspeaker session volume from 40% to 75%.
  • Allow resizing of the tab list to a smaller minimum width.
  • Update shortcut keys to match ordering of tabs.
  • Fix incorrect direction of Hebrew text when sending from a mobile device.
  • Fix an issue with the information narrated by a screen reader for the Present Desktop/Give Control feature.
  • Show opened rooms in addition to followed rooms in Select Room lists.
  • Add ability to disable VoIP capability while custom RCC app is enabled.
  • Change offline IM tagline to "Try the Skype for Business mobile app."
  • Fix an issue that causes a conversation window for an automatically accepted conversation to open as a normal window, instead of minimized, and unexpectedly take focus away from other windows.
  • Fix an issue with using a screen reader on the Skype Meeting Options dialog box.
  • Fix an issue where the first message in an invite isn't shown in the Missed Conversation email.
  • Fix an issue where duplicate dial-in numbers are displayed when creating a meeting invite from Outlook using the New Skype Meeting button.

  • Fix an issue where not all the contacts are displayed in the conversation window title when a user starts a conversation with a contact and then adds another contact.
  • Fix an issue where Narrator doesn't read the 2nd line of notifications.
  • Fix an issue where calls are transferred to VOIP instead of the consulted number.
  • Fix an issue where Narrator announces incorrect information when the user is navigating in the Content window.
