How to Join the Domain on the Domain Controller

After you create the domain and restart the domain controller, join each server to the appropriate domain.

To join the server to the domain on Windows Server 2003

  1. On the desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

  2. In the System Properties dialog box, on the Computer Name tab, click Change.

  3. In the Computer Name Changes dialog box, in the Member of section, select Domain, type the name of the domain to join, and then click OK.

  4. In the Computer Name Changes dialog box, in the User name box, type the name of an account that has permission to join the domain.

  5. In the Password box, type the password for the account you just entered, and then click OK.

  6. In the Computer Name Changes dialog box, click OK.

  7. In the Computer Name Changes dialog box that welcomes you to the domain, click OK.

  8. In the Computer Name Changes dialog box that advises you to restart the computer, click OK.

  9. In the System Properties dialog box, click OK.

  10. In the System Settings Change dialog box, click Yes to restart the server.

To join the server to the domain on Windows Server 2008

  1. Click Start, and then right-click Computer, and then click Manage.

  2. In Server Manager, click ChangeSystemProperties.

  3. In the SystemProperties dialog box, on the ComputerName tab, click Change.

  4. In the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box, in the MemberOf section, select Domain, type the name of the domain to join, and then click OK.

  5. In the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box that welcomes you to the domain, click OK.

  6. In the SystemProperties dialog box, click Apply and then click Close.
