Logs and Output Files

Health_Chk retrieves FRS-related state information from the specified domain controller or server and stores this information in text files. These text files provide administrators with in-depth data that can be used to monitor or troubleshoot an FRS system.

Health_Chk can take quite a while to run. The script may collect huge amounts of data. This is especially true if you encounter problems with full staging areas, though staging area problems are not common on computers running Windows 2000 SP3 and later.

The text files are written to a specified directory using the name of the target machine.

Note

  • Organizations typically have well-established tools for collecting event logs from Windows systems, and these should also continue to be used. The event log data collected by Health_Chk contains only a subset of the full event information.

The following lists the specific text files that Health_Chk creates, with a description of the data they contain:

ds_showconn.txt

The output from repadmin /showconn.

ds_showreps.txt

The output from repadmin /showreps.

evl_application.txt

Application event logs in text format.

evl_dns.txt

DNS server event logs in text format.

evl_ds.txt

Active Directory event logs in text format.

evl_ntfrs.txt

FRS event logs in text format.

evl_system.txt

System event logs in text format.

ntfrs_config.txt

Output from ntfrsutl configtable: Lists all replica sets.

ntfrs_ds.txt

The output from ntfrsutl ds: Displays the machine (FRS) topology definition in the local Domain Controller, from the perspective of the machine.

ntfrs_errscan.txt

A scan of error messages from the FRS debug logs.

ntfrs_inlog.txt

The output from ntfrsutl inlog: Shows inbound Change Orders (CO's).

ntfrs_machine.txt

A listing of free disk space on all drives.

ntfrs_outlog.txt

The output from ntfrsutl outlog: Shows outbound Change Orders (CO's).

Ntfrs_reg.txt

The registry data from HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\NtFrs and below.

Ntfrs_sets.txt

The output from ntfrsutl sets: A list of inbound and outbound connections and their status.

Ntfrs_sysvol.txt

The output from ‘dir /s *.*’ of the SYSVOL share.

Ntfrs_version.txt

The output from ntfrsutl version: Shows FRS version information.

Configuration Settings

Health_Chk does not modify any configuration settings either on the target computer or in the Active Directory. The script only reads configuration and status information.
