Die abstrakte Syntax Notation 1 (ASN.1), die in der CCITT-Empfehlung X.208 definiert ist, ist eine Möglichkeit, abstrakte Objekte anzugeben, die seriell übertragen werden. Der Satz von ASN.1-Regeln für die Darstellung solcher Objekte als Zeichenfolgen von Einsen und Nullen wird als Distinguished Encoding Rules (DER) bezeichnet und in der CCITT-Empfehlung X.509, Abschnitt 8.7 definiert. Diese Codierungsmethoden werden derzeit vom Kryptografienamespace in .NET Framework verwendet.
Wenn beim Zugriff auf eine Instanz dieser Klasse ein unbekannter Datentyp auftritt, werden Daten als hexadezimale Zeichenfolge zurückgegeben.
