How to Create Products and Product Variants

For the latest version of Commerce Server 2007 Help, see the Microsoft Web site.

You use the New Product Wizard to add products and product variants to a catalog.

To start the New Product Wizard

  1. Click Start, point to Microsoft Commerce Server 2007 , and then click Catalog Manager.

  2. In Commerce Server Catalog Manager, in the Views pane, click Catalogs.

  3. In the Catalogs pane, select the catalog or category to which you want to add a product.

  4. In the Task pane, click Create a New Product.

  5. On the Welcome to the New Product Wizard page, click Next.

To select the product definition

  1. On the Definition Type Selection page, in the Definition box, select a product definition from the existing list, and then click Next.

The product definition specifies the properties for a particular type of product. Each product is associated with a product definition. You create a product definition by assigning product properties to it. For example, the "Book" product definition could contain "Author", "Title", and "List Price" properties.

  2. On the Product Properties page, do the following:

    Use this

    To do this

    Product ID

Type a product ID for the product.

    Definition Name

This box displays the definition name that you selected in the previous step.

    You cannot edit this box.

    Display Name

Type the display name for the product as you want it to appear in the product catalog.

If the product does not have a display name, only the product ID displays in the Product Picker dialog box.

    List Price

Type a price for the product.

The price of a product should be larger than zero (0).

    Use Category Pricing

If you create the product under a category, you can also enable category pricing for the product.

Select this option if you want this product to use the price defined for the primary parent category.

If you enter a price for the product and enable category pricing, the product will take the price of the primary parent category. When you reset the category pricing, the product will take the price that you enter.

    Description

Type a description for the product.

    Name

Type a name for the product.

  3. Click Next.

To specify the values for the custom properties

  1. On the Product Custom Properties page, in the Value box, type the value for the custom property.

    Note

The Double type custom property has a range of positive values that is approximately 2.23E –308 through 1.79E 308. The range of negative values is approximately –2.23E –308 through –1.79E 308. In the Custom Product Properties page, they are rounded off and appear with a precision of eight digits. If they are more than eight digits then the Catalog Manager uses the E+ notation. For example, 9875.43216 displays as 9875.4321, whereas the number 1234567899 displays as 1.2345689e+09.

    Note

The Float (Decimal) type custom property has a range of positive values that is approximately 2.23E –308 through 1.79E 308. The range of negative values is approximately –2.23E –308 through –1.79E 308. In the Custom Product Properties page, they are rounded off and appear with a precision of seven digits. If they are more than seven digits then the Catalog Manager uses the E+ notation. For example, 9875.43216 displays as 9875.432, whereas the number 12345678 displays as 1.234568e+07.

  1. On the Category Associations page, select the primary category from the drop-down list. You can only define one of the parent categories for the product as a primary category.

    • In a base catalog, if you set UseCategory Pricing for the product, the product obtains its price from the primary category.

    • If you add the base catalog to a virtual catalog and a product contains more than one parent category, the price rule applied to the primary category of the product is applied to the product.

    • If you set UseCategory Pricing for the product then you must select a primary category for the product.

  2. Click Add to open the Product Picker dialog box to search for a category to add.

  3. In the Product Picker dialog box, search for the category you want for the association.

  2. In the Product Picker dialog box, search for the category or product that you want for the association.

  3. In the Results pane, select the items that you want for the association, and then click OK.

  4. On the Product Relationships page, in the Relationships box, type the name of the relationship for each item, and then click Next.
