Archiving and Restoring Data
Published : September 27, 2005
After Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) is deployed in your environment, you will use DPM and its disk-based recovery functionality to handle most of your short-term data recovery needs. You may also continue to use tape for long-term data archiving and disaster recovery. DPM fits seamlessly into existing archiving solutions.
Archiving file server data from the replicas on the DPM server rather than from the file servers eliminates the problem of scheduling backups around file server availability. When you archive DPM to tape, you can, in the event of a disaster, restore archived data to file servers and rebuild the DPM server.
This chapter explains how to plan and deploy a solution for archiving data files and backing up DPM to tape. The chapter describes, in generic terms, the processes for archiving and restoring DPM by using different types of backup software. Specific procedures will vary according to the backup software used.
Note
For instructions on recovering data by using DPM, see the “Recovering Data” section (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=51984) in DPM Help. For issues related to recovering data by using DPM, see the “Troubleshooting” chapter (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=46369) in this guide.
