Best Specification to Run VS 2022

I am in the process of moving to VS2022 from VS2008 and I am finding it quite a big jump! Apart from taming the popups which keep appearing, and are very confusing, I am finding VS2022 much slower than VS2008, perhaps partly because it is doing more, hence the popups.

I have a choice of PCs to use (both run Win 10 Pro):

Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3 mainboard with Intel i5 2500K 3.60 GHz 16 GB RAM

HP Z620 with Dual Xeon E5 2640 2.5 GHz 64 GB RAM

Neither will boot from NVMe but they both use SSDs for booting and data.

I have a bit of a sentimental attachment to the HP big iron but I would appreciate any thoughts on which you think would give better performance for VS2022.

Many thanks :-)

    Hello @Jeff Gaines ,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

For performance, looks like i5 2500K is better, and the recommended RAM is normally 16GB(which means 16GB RAM is mostly enough), so in my opinion, you may choose the first one.

I have a bit of a sentimental attachment to the HP big iron…

I believe you have the answer. Though the first PC may be better, I think the second PC should also run VS 2022 without any problem.

    Sincerely,

    Tianyu

    Hello there,

For guidance on improving performance, see Optimize Visual Studio performance.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/ide/optimize-visual-studio-performance?view=vs-2022

    Below is the system requirements.

ARM64 or x64 processor; Quad-core or better recommended. ARM 32 processors are not supported.

Minimum of 4 GB of RAM. Many factors impact resources used; we recommend 16 GB RAM for typical professional solutions.

Windows 365: Minimum 2 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. 4 vCPU and 16 GB of RAM recommended.

Hope this resolves your Query !!
