Hi Azure Community, I'm facing an issue while trying to validate a custom domain for my Azure Static Web App, and I'm looking for some guidance. Steps I've Taken: DNS Configuration on GoDaddy: I created a CNAME record with the following details: Name: myapp Value: victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net Custom Domain Setup in Azure Portal: I attempted to create a custom domain in the Azure portal with the name: myapp.azurewebsites.net. This is needed to match the domain used for my other Azure applications for authorization purposes. In the validation step, I tried to validate the CNAME record created at the external DNS. Issue Encountered: I received the following error: "CNAME Record is invalid. Please ensure the CNAME record has been created." Diagnostic Steps: I used the nslookup tool to check the CNAME record and received the following result: add screen Observations: It seems like the CNAME record is pointing to azurestaticappstm4.trafficmanager.net instead of directly pointing to victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net. Questions: Is there something wrong with my DNS configuration on GoDaddy? Am I missing any steps in the Azure portal configuration?

The domain "azurewebsites.net" is owned by Azure and I am afraid it won't be possible for you to have purchased this domain "azurewebsites.net" from a DNS Registrar

In this case, "myapp.azurewebsites.net" will never have a CNAME record to your static web app "victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net"

Thank you for your response.

To clarify, I don't intend to purchase or own the domain azurewebsites.net. Instead, I am trying to create a custom subdomain that uses azurewebsites.net (e.g., myapp.azurewebsites.net) to redirect to my static web application hosted at victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net.

However, it appears that the issue is not specifically related to the azurewebsites.net domain. I attempted to create a different custom domain for my static web application and encountered the same problem. As shown in the attached screenshot, the nslookup tool indicates that the CNAME record is pointing to azurestaticappstm4.trafficmanager.net instead of directly to my static web app URL victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net.

My primary concern is that the CNAME record for my static web app seems to be misconfigured or redirected incorrectly. Could you please help me understand why this might be happening and how to correctly set up the CNAME record so that it properly points to my static web app?

I am afraid your requirement is still not clear to me.

Points to note:

"azurewebsites.net" is not owned by you, and so, you cannot modify any DNS records in the domain "azurewebsites.net"

Similarly, "azurestaticapps.net" is not owned by you, and so, you cannot modify any DNS records in the domain "azurestaticapps.net"

This means, you cannot create either of the below :

myapp.azurewebsites.net ------- CNAME pointing to ---------- victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net

victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net ------- CNAME pointing to ---------- myapp.azurewebsites.net

Now,

victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net having a CNAME to "azurestaticappstm4.trafficmanager.net" is expected and this is managed by the platform

This is different and you do not have to worry about it.

We cannot change this CNAME to point to anything else and is by design.

The point of having a custom domain, is to make the

Custom domain point to the Static Web App

Not the other way around.

i.e., if I have a custom domain called "contoso.com"

I can make a CNAME record "test.contoso.com" to point to "victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net"

This is possible because I own the domain "contoso.com" and I can add the CNAME record as I intend.

And this is what is required to add a custom domain to static web app.

However, if your intention is to make a CNAME record "victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net" to point to "test.contoso.com" or anything else, this is not possible.

In the screenshot you shared,

If you own the domain "blabla.com"

and you created a CNAME record "myapp" pointing to "victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net"

The validation would have worked.

Thanks for clarifying the principles behind setting up custom domains for Azure Static Web Apps. I now understand that I can't modify or extend azurewebsites.net or azurestaticapps.net domains. Instead, I need to use a domain that I own and create a CNAME record pointing to my Azure Static Web App's default domain.

Here’s my updated understanding:

I will use my own domain (e.g., yourdomain.com).

I will create a CNAME record in my domain registrar's DNS settings for the subdomain (e.g., www.yourdomain.com) pointing to my Azure Static Web App's default domain (e.g., victorious-any-bla-bla.azurestaticapps.net).

I will then configure this custom domain in the Azure portal by adding it under the "Custom domains" section of my Azure Static Web App.

This clarification helps a lot. Thank you for your assistance!
