How to fix Unexpected character encountered while parsing value: <. Path '', line 0, position 0. when connecting to Exchange Online via powershell

I am running the latest exchange online management module version 3.5.1 and have powershellget 2.2.5 and packagemanagement 1.4.8.1 installed. When I run the Connect-ExchangeOnline cmdlet I get the following error message:

The same thing is also happening to me ALL the time.

It also happens to me when i run: Get-mailboxfolderpermissions, get-migrationbatch, get-migrationuser and a slew of other commands. Only happens when running ExchangeOnline commands. Mggraph, teams and such have given me no issues.

This happens to me too when running Connect-IPPSSession. The same error and I think it might be because WinrRM is being controlled by group policy to not allow basic auth locally.

Hi Noah,

I tried to connect using this command only: connect-exchangeonline, which opened up my company's sign on portal. I selected my admin account and then received that parsing error. I tried it this way: Connect-ExchangeOnline -UserPrincipalName chris@contoso.com and got the same error. I also tried it this way: Connect-ExchangeOnline -UserPrincipalName chris@contoso.com -Organization "contoso.onmicrosoft.com". Please advise as I'm not sure where I could be making a mistake in my syntax.

Hi,

If there exist issue with it, I suggest you could use command below to uninstall Exchange online module and reinstall it to see if it works.

Uninstall-Module -Name ExchangeOnlineManagement Install-Module -Name ExchangeOnlineManagement
