dns debug log character/locale configuration

How can I change the region/locale configuration of the DNS debug logs?

I'm noticing some extra characters which break do not play nice with a parser I use for analysing the logs. I'd rather not change the parser to support these characters but instead change the log format itself.

Currently the logs appear like this:

DNS Server log file creation at 9.3.2021 ã. 11:01:47

Log file wrap at 9.3.2021 ã. 11:01:47

...

9.3.2021 ã. 11:01:48 3870 PACKET redacted UDP Rcv redacted 7305 Q [0001 D NOERROR] A redacted

Notice the ã. in the date/time stamp as well as the date format itself (dot delimited instead of slash / ).

On other DNS servers the format is the US date-time format like this:

DNS Server log file creation at 3/17/2021 11:42:21 AM

...

3/17/2021 11:44:15 AM 0C34 PACKET redacted UDP Snd redacted 686f R Q [8385 A DR NXDOMAIN] SRV redacted

Changing the OS region locality settings does not seem to change this for some reason. Any ideas how this is applied?

    Hi,

Thanks for posting in Q&A platform.

Based on provided information, my understanding is you need the DNS debug log displayed as English. Am I correct here? Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

May I know what's the display language of your system?

If the display language is not English, I would suggest you change the display language to English. And then, please check if the format of DNS debug log is the format you need.

    Best Regards,
    Sunny

    Hi @Sunny Qi ,

This is the correct understanding, yes. I have changed the region/locale settings on the OS itself however this did not change the language of the logs.

I stopped the DNS service, deleted the existing log file and restarted the DNS service > this created a new log file with the same language formatting.

I then went to DNS manager, edited the properties by disabling the Debug Logs feature entirely, restarted the DNs service, then enabled it again > it still produced a log file not respecting the OS region setting.

Is there anything else I can try?

    Tony

    Hi Tony,

    Thanks for your feedback.

May I know if the Regional format has been configured as English (United States)

Meanwhile, if the Windows display language has been configured as English (United States). Please also make sue that English (United States) is the preferred languages.

    Hello,

I'm having the same issue, has anybody changed the date format on the DNS log file?

I'm trying to change from DD/MM/YYYY to MM/DD/YYYY.

    Hi,

anyone able to resolve the issue?

My OS date format is MM/DD/YYYY but the DNS log file date format is still show as DD/MM/YYYY. I'm trying to change from DD/MM/YYYY to MM/DD/YYYY in the DNS log file as well.

    Appreciate and thanks.
