batch request with the Graph SDK

When using a batch request with the Graph SDK to call the Teams remove member API, the call throws a "Too Many Requests" (HTTP 429) error. But even though the error is returned, the user is still removed from the team. Why does this happen?

In some cases, the API may successfully complete the operation but still return a 429 error if the request causes the system to exceed its threshold. This means the member removal was likely successful, but the response indicates that you're exceeding throttling limits.

So, the error doesn't necessarily mean the operation failed, it just means you're being throttled and should slow down future requests to avoid service disruption.

Throttling is a temporary server-side response used to manage sudden surges in traffic. It typically occurs when a client sends too many requests in a short burst. The server replies with a 429 Too Many Requests status and a Retry-After header, indicating how long to wait before retrying. Once the client backs off and respects the wait time, requests usually resume successfully.

Rate limiting, imposes a strict cap on the number of allowed operations per resource or tenant within a set time frame. Even if you wait and retry after receiving a Retry-After header, you may still hit the limit until the time window resets. This mechanism ensures fair usage and protects the service from sustained overuse.
The specific rate limit for removing a member from a team using the DELETE /teams/{team-id}/members/{membership-id} endpoint is not explicitly documented. However, based on comparable DELETE operations in Microsoft Teams such as deleting channels, tabs, or installed apps, it is reasonable to infer a limit of 15 requests per second per app per tenant, and 150 requests per second per app across all tenants.
