Hi guys just want to ask if you encountered the same problem. I sent messages in a groupchat in msteams for work purpose. After my shift I logout from the dekstop i used and later my workmate told that nothing was sent at that time. I tried opening my msteams so we logged out my workmates ms teams and found that there was no messages and I cant also find those messages that I sent to prove that i really sent an update. But i really send those messages. Did this ever happened to you using ms teams? How can I retrieve those messages or prove i sent them?

It sounds like you may have encountered an issue with message visibility in Microsoft Teams. There are a few reasons why messages might not appear in a group chat:

    1. Retention Policies: If your organization has configured retention policies, messages can be deleted unexpectedly. This could happen if the policy excludes the chat location or has a shorter retention period than expected. In such cases, the messages might still be stored in compliance copies but not visible in the chat.
    2. Technical Issues: Sometimes, messages may not send properly due to network issues or application glitches. If the message was not successfully sent, it would not appear in the chat.
    3. User Permissions: If there are external users in the chat, sharing settings may restrict visibility of messages or files.

To retrieve messages or prove that you sent them, you can check the following:

    • Search Function: Use the search bar in Teams to look for keywords from your messages.
    • Compliance Copies: If your organization has eDiscovery capabilities, your IT department may be able to retrieve compliance copies of the messages.
    • Ask Your IT Support: If you suspect a retention policy issue, contacting your IT support team could provide clarity on whether the messages were deleted due to policy settings.

If you continue to experience issues, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance.

    Hi @Julienn Cortes,
Thank you for posting your question to Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Messages in Microsoft Teams can disappear or fail to appear for several reasons. If you were offline or had an unstable connection when sending, the messages may not have synced to the cloud, and logging out before the sync completes can leave them stored only in the local cache without uploading. Additionally, the Teams desktop app relies on temporary data, so if the cache is cleared or becomes corrupted, unsynced messages can vanish. In some cases, organizational policies or retention settings may also delete unsent or unapproved content, which can result in messages not being visible later.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. To look for your message, you can check Teams on Web or Mobile by signing in at https://teams.microsoft.com with the same account. If messages synced, they would appear there.

Even if your organization doesn't have IT, you can reach out to the person owns the administrator credentials to ask them to check audit logs or message history in Microsoft 365 compliance center.
If you need to prove you sent them, there will be a very complicated process and scenario for you. You check the local cache folder C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\MicrosoftTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams\EBWebView\Default\IndexedDB<url>before it’s cleared and look for IndexedDB or logs.

You can use this forensics tools from GitHub: GitHub – teams-decoder to extracts messages from local cache without server access and following the guide via this article: Extracting Communication Artefacts from Microsoft Teams 1.X and Teams 2.X

Disclaimer: The website provided is a third-party resource and is not affiliated with Microsoft. Please proceed with caution and verify any downloads or instructions directly with the manufacturer.

However, if the messages never synced to the cloud, they cannot be restored from Microsoft servers. If the cache hasn’t been cleared, the only evidence you can rely on is the local cache.
