A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Logging into Authenticator app
I’m trying to log into my Authenticator app but it says that I need to put in the numbers that are showing on my screen through the app but I can’t do that because it’s through the app already and when I ask for a verification code I don’t get sent any codes so I can’t get into my account

2026-05-14T07:54:37.5166667+00:00 This situation occurs when the account is locked into using Microsoft Authenticator as the only verification method and there is no working alternative method available.
Use these steps depending on the type of account:
- If this is a personal Microsoft account (Outlook/Hotmail/Xbox, etc.):
- When prompted for a code and none of the listed methods work, select I don't have any of these (or similar wording) on the sign‑in screen and follow the prompts to update or replace the security info.
- If the phone/email listed is no longer accessible, the recovery flow will guide through adding new security info. Be aware that changing all security info can place the account under a temporary restriction period while ownership is verified.
- If this is a work or school account (Microsoft 365/Entra ID):
- Try any alternative sign‑in method that may be configured (SMS, email, hardware token, etc.).
- If no alternative method works and the device with Authenticator is unavailable, contact the organization’s help desk or Microsoft 365/Entra administrator and ask them to reset multifactor authentication for the account. They can do this in the Microsoft Entra admin center by requiring re‑registration of MFA, which forces a fresh Authenticator setup on next sign‑in.
- If verification codes (SMS/email) are not arriving:
- Avoid repeatedly requesting new codes, as excessive requests can trigger a temporary block where codes are not sent.
- Check junk/spam folders for messages from @accountprotection.microsoft.com and mark as trusted.
- Confirm that the phone number or email address shown (masked) is correct.
- Ensure the phone can receive SMS from unknown numbers and that the SMS inbox is not full.
- If using a VOIP number, switch to a mobile number instead.
- In some cases, heavy or risky traffic from a region can delay or block codes; these issues usually resolve automatically after some time.
- If still not receiving codes, another verification method must be used, or wait until access to the listed phone/email is possible. Support agents cannot send codes or change security info on the account.
If none of the above paths work and there is no admin who can reset MFA (for a work/school account), or all security info for a personal account is inaccessible, direct assistance from Microsoft support is required. Use the sign‑in helper for personal accounts or contact support and request escalation to the appropriate team; note that agents still cannot bypass security but can guide through the official recovery process.
