Question

I would like to create an Azure data catalog but I get an error message
is purview new version or data catalog?

It looks like they want you to migrate your Azure Data Catalog to Purview:

Yes, for all practical purposes Azure Purview is the new Azure Data Catalog @Anonymous

Azure Purview does more than Data Catalog, kind of like how Azure Synapse Analytics does more than Data Factory.

I just Tried creating a new (free sku) Azure Data Catalog through the Azure portal in region 'North Europe'. I received a different error stating the deployment timed out.

In the documentation (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/data-catalog/data-catalog-get-started) there is no reference the Azure Data Catalog is retired. According to this link (https://kyleake.medium.com/retirement-notice-from-azure-data-catalog-to-azure-purview-d5ed29c0a70c) however, the data catalog is retired and will be phased out by 2025.

Of course Purview has many new and improved features that could replace data catalog in many use cases. However, pricing might be an issue for small organizations.
