Receiving connection errors for a few specific Microsoft webpages on one device

Hi all,

Since a few weeks I'm receiving different types of connection errors when connecting to a few specific webpages which seem Microsoft related. For example https://login.microsoftonline.com, but also Linkedin, bing.com. Occurs on all browsers for one specific device, and on different networks.

When opening LinkedIn/Bing in a new session, I always first get the below screen, then within 2 seconds the page reloads and opens just fine. During that session there would be no issues anymore, but after closing the webpage and reopening after a minute the same error would pop up again. As the page reloads in 2 seconds, it's not a big issue.

Site not reachable, the connection has been re established

BUT

Around the same time I started experincing a similar issue when trying to connect to Sharepoint sites and Onedrive for Business via Microsoft Power BI Desktop. After pressing 'sign in' to authenticate a query for sharepoint resources, an authentication pop-up should open ( https://login.microsoftonline.com), but very often I will get this screen instead:

But I do not always get this error. If I close and try to sign in a couple of times, at some point the pop-up will open just fine and I can insert my credentials.

Sadly, even when the initial authentication oes work, a full Power BI report currently refresh fails 100% of the time as I will always get this error for at least one of the sharepoint / onedrive queries:

I've been using this device for one year now, and before a few weeks back this has never been an issue for me.

My 'luck' is that I experience this issue only on my laptop (Windows Home 22H2). (A different PC (Windows 11 Home 21H2,) I use works just fine, on the same network.

I've already tried:

  • Flush DNS
  • Reset internet properties for TLS (although they were already at defaults)
  • Reset Network drivers
  • Uninstall third party security software, turn off Firewall + allowing certain programs through the firewall
  • Trying different browsers & different networks: same result
  • Including sites to trusted sites
  • I don't have any proxy server or VPN
  • Trying a different device: no issues whatsoever. The other device I tried runs on the problematic device on .

As nothing helped, I've even went so far as to reset the laptop to factory settings, but this did not resolve the issue either.

Please, would there be anyone that knows another explanation for this issue?

Would there be any way to get in touch with MS support to solve this issue collaboratively?

Let me know if mroe details need to be provided

    Thanks for the quick response.

    • Browsers: I usually use Chrome, but I've also tried using Edge, Firefox. Same issue occurs. I'm not sure what the IE mode is, will take a look at that now.
    • TLS: The settings are at the defaults, which are equal to the proposed checks/unchecks. In the past weeks I've tried different settings but same result, since I've resetted the laptop I've kept them at the same level.
    • Anti-virus: In the past I had a norton trial, but this has expired a long time ago. During my testing I uninstalled the software entirely. Also I tested while turning of firewall, but the same result

I will take a look on the policy blog post. WIll let you know if that helps.

Thanks for the link, I am the admin, so if the other tips don't help I will definitely open a ticket.

    Dear Koen,

    Welcome to the forum here.

Please confirm what browser are you using and whether you use Edge. If yes, confirm whether you use the Edge browser in the IE mode.

If you haven't tried the way, I suggest you go to Control Panel>Advanced and then check whether all the following options are checked and unchecked. If no, check them, clear the browser cache, close the browser, restart the browser and then do a test to see the result.

    Check

    Use TLS 1.0

    Use TLS 1.1

    Use TLS 1.2

    Uncheck

    Use SSL 3.0

Meanwhile, as the issue only happens on the specific device in your environment, I suggest you temporarily close all other applications including the anti-virus software and only open the browser to see whether the issue happens.

Moreover, as AI_Eu mentioned in the article, there may be a policy causing the issue. I also suggest you check whether there is such a policy in your environment.

If all the ways above don't work for you, the next step may be to involve our related team to further investigate some logs from your side. So they can check whether the server can return the right certificate the client is expecting at your side and whether they can help you enable System.Net.ServicePointManager.SecurityProtocol = System.Net.SecurityProtocolType.Tls12 or System.Net.ServicePointManager.Expect100Continue = False at your side if it is needed.

You can contact the administrator in your company if you aren't the administrator and let him follow the steps in the following article to open a support ticket to reach our related team as soon as possible. Get support for Microsoft 365 for business

Sorry for that our category may have limited resources on helping you further checking the logs from your side.

Thanks for your effort and time!

    Sincerely,
