A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Dear Albert.D,
Good day! Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.
As per your description, we're sorry to hear that your new edits were lost unexpectedly.
If the file is located on your disk, please check these two folder locations for a backup file:
-
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word -
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles
For more suggestions, please refer to this article: How to recover unsaved Word documents - Microsoft 365 Apps | Microsoft Learn.
If the file is located in the cloud, such as OneDrive or SharePoint, please check if the version history and restore feature can help:
- Restore a previous version of an item or file in SharePoint - Microsoft Support
- Restore your OneDrive - Microsoft Support
- Restore a shared library - Microsoft Support
- How to recover missing, deleted or corrupted items in SharePoint and OneDrive for work or school - Microsoft Support
If you still cannot find the missing file, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Considering there might be limited solutions available on your end, the best way to troubleshoot further is to contact the related team with higher permissions who can look for other ways to restore the file.
Since you posted this question in the "For Education" category, we assume you have a work or school account organized by your organization. If so, we recommend contacting your Microsoft 365 administrator to raise a support ticket and reach out to the Microsoft support team. They have higher permissions to assist you directly and can involve more resources to check if this can be restored from the backend. This would be the most efficient way to handle this case for you.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Stay safe and healthy always.
Sincerely,
