Signatures - right mouse button

Hi,

we have PCs with Outlook 2021: when we right-click in the body of a new email, instead of showing the drop-down menu with copy, paste, etc., a window appears with the names of the saved signatures. Why does this happen?

    Thank you for sharing the details. I completely understand how confusing this must be, especially since the right-click behavior in Outlook usually shows the standard editing menu, not the list of signatures. 

    I’ve recreated this scenario in a test environment and noticed that it can sometimes happen when the right-click is performed too close to the existing signature block in the message body. Outlook appears to interpret that action as interacting with the signature area itself rather than the editable text space. 

    Before we go further, could you please try this quick double-check:

    Temporarily disable your default signature and test on a blank email:

    1. Go to File > Options > Mail > Signatures...

    2. Under Choose default signature, set New messages to (none).

    3. Open a new email. It should now be completely blank, without any signature inserted.

    4. Right-click anywhere in that blank message body.

    If the normal right-click menu (Copy, Paste, etc.) now appears, the issue is likely related to Outlook recognizing the signature region as non-editable.

    If the problem still happens even in this blank email, please continue with the following steps to rule out other possible causes:

    Start Outlook in Safe Mode 

    This helps check if an add-in might be interfering. 

    1. Completely close Outlook. 

    2. Press Windows + R. type: outlook.exe /safe and press Enter

    3. Create a new email and right-click in the message body again.  

    If the normal menu reappears, one of your add-ins is likely the cause. 

    You can disable them via File > Options > Add-ins

    Repair the Office application 

    If Safe Mode doesn’t help, try restoring the Outlook components: 

    1. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features. 

    2. Select Microsoft Office > Change

    3. Choose Quick Repair first. 

    • If the issue remains, run Online Repair for a deeper fix.

    Create a new Outlook profile  

    If the issue persists even in Safe Mode and after repair, the Outlook profile may be corrupted. 

    1. Close Outlook. 

    2. Go to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Add… Tess

    3. Create a new one (for example, TestProfile) and add a single email account.

    4. Open Outlook with this profile and check if the issue is gone. 

    If right-clicking now works correctly, your previous profile was corrupted. You can safely switch to the new one.
