OneDrive for Mac syncing issue

I’m encountering a problem with OneDrive on macOS where the sync client isn’t behaving as expected. Certain files and folders either fail to sync, get stuck in a “sync pending” state, or show inconsistent status between Finder and the OneDrive app.

Hello Browning

Thank you for posting your question on the Q&A Forum.

Before starting any troubleshooting, please:

  • Verify your internet connection.
  • Confirm you haven’t exceeded your OneDrive storage quota.
  • Update your OneDrive client to the latest version.
  • Check your OneDrive on the web to confirm whether all files have successfully synced.

Next, please try these standard troubleshooting steps:

1> Pause & Resume Sync: Click the OneDrive icon in the menu bar > Pause syncing > Resume syncing.

2> Unlink & Relink Account: Go to OneDrive Preferences > Account > Unlink this Mac > Sign in again.

3> Reset OneDrive

Quit OneDrive completely.

Open Finder > Applications > locate OneDrive > Right-click OneDrive.app > Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources.

Double-click one of these files (depending on your version):

  • ResetOneDriveApp.command
  • ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command

A Terminal window may briefly appear, just let it finish. After reset, reopen OneDrive from Applications and sign back in.

Please note that OneDrive has restrictions on certain files and folders, including file names, file types, and path lengths. These restrictions might be the reason why your sync is getting stuck on certain files. Review and remove any files that do not meet these requirements from your sync folder, then try syncing again.

If the issue persists, kindly provide:

  • Whether you are using a business or personal account
  • Your OneDrive version
  • Your macOS version

I hope these steps prove helpful to you. I look forward to hearing your feedback.
