    Hello John Zogheb,

Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Q&A forum.

Please note that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to hide your personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.

I understand you’re stuck with a yearly billing charge that’s been hanging for weeks and the error CannotPurchaseWithActiveRecurrencePastGracePeriod is preventing you from accessing Outlook.

This specific error usually happens when a subscription renewal is still in a pending or grace‑period state, and the system blocks new purchases or retries until the previous renewal is fully resolved. Please try these steps below:

    1. Clear the stuck billing status
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      • Check if the subscription shows Past Due, Pending, or Grace Period.
      • If you see a Retry payment or Update payment method button, complete that first—even if the charge looks old.
    2. Update or replace the payment method

If the transaction is locked and cannot be retried: this situation often requires Microsoft Support to manually reset the renewal status:

    1. Go to Contact Us - Microsoft and sign in your account.
    2. Type Cancel recurring billing in the search box.
    3. Click Get help and Select Contact Support.
    4. Choose Microsoft 365 and Office as Products and Services; and Billing and payment updates as Category
    5. Click Confirm.
    6. You can choose to chat with a support representative.

Note: The chat support team only works during certain working hours. Therefore, if the last window indicates that you are unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. That way, they can call you and help you.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards

The credit cards are fine, further research says you need to speak with Microsoft to release the subscription. However there is not a clear way to get in touch with a human at Microsoft as even their main phone number is nothing but prompts and ultimately they disconnect you. How else can you get this users 365 working again with the subscription
