What the crap is going on with outlook??? I have had this account for many years, never had any problems until a couple of weeks ago. It says something about choosing a different network or some stupid thing like that. It is incredibly frustrating! Can someone please help me with this?

    Dear Lorraine,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Q&A. I understand how annoying it is when an account that has worked perfectly for years suddenly stops connecting.

The specific error message "Choose a different network" essentially means Outlook thinks your current internet connection is either "Metered" (restricted data usage) or "Blocked" by a security filter. Here are the two best steps to clear this error:

    1. The "Metered Connection" Glitch

Windows sometimes incorrectly flags your home Wi-Fi as a "Metered Connection" (like a limited data plan), which forces Outlook to pause to save data.

    • Click the Start button and type "Wi-Fi Settings".
    • Click Manage known networks.
    • Click on your current Wi-Fi name (Properties).
    • Look for "Set as metered connection".
    • Turn this OFF.
    • Restart Outlook.

    2. Check for VPN or Antivirus Blocks

If your connection settings are normal, a security update might be blocking the specific ports Outlook uses to talk to the server.

    • The Test: If you use a VPN (like NordVPN, ExpressVPN) or 3rd-party Antivirus (Norton, McAfee), they often update silently in the background. Temporarily turn them off completely.
    • If Outlook suddenly connects while they are off, you know that software is the culprit and needs to be updated or re-installed.
    • Disclaimer: Please remember to turn your Antivirus/Firewall back on immediately after this test to keep your computer secure.

I hope these steps get you back online quickly. Please let me know if the error persists!

If you're experiencing issues logging into your Outlook account and receiving messages about needing to choose a different network, it could be related to network connectivity or account settings. Here are some steps you can try:

    1. Check Your Network Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable. If possible, try switching to a different network (like a mobile hotspot) to see if that resolves the issue.
    2. Clear Browser Cache: If you're using a web browser, clearing the cache and cookies can sometimes resolve login issues.
    3. Use InPrivate or Incognito Mode: Try logging in using your browser's InPrivate or Incognito mode to bypass any cached data that might be causing problems.
    4. Check for Service Outages: Sometimes, Outlook services may be temporarily down. You can check the Microsoft service status page for any ongoing issues.
    5. Account Recovery: If you suspect your account may be locked or compromised, follow the account recovery process provided by Microsoft to regain access.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, you may want to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.
