While I was attempting to install the newer OneNote by clicking the banner in the old one, the error occured. How can I fix this?

I understand how frustrating it can be to encounter an installation error when trying to upgrade OneNote, especially when following the in‑app prompt and expecting the process to complete smoothly.

This behavior occurs because your device currently has Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021 installed. The newer OneNote (Microsoft Store / Microsoft 365 version) is not compatible with Office LTSC, as they use different installation technologies.

To resolve this, please review the supported options below:

Keep Office LTSC 2021 installed
- The newer OneNote cannot be installed alongside Office LTSC 2021.
- Please continue using the OneNote desktop application that is included with Office LTSC.
- You can open it directly from the Start menu by searching for OneNote.
Switch to Microsoft 365 Apps
- If you want to use the newer OneNote experience, you must first uninstall Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021.
- After removal, install Microsoft 365 Apps using a valid Microsoft 365 subscription.
  
  Note: This requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. LTSC licenses cannot be reused for Microsoft 365.
- Once installed, you will be able to install and use the newer OneNote version without errors.

Hello Kunitachi Hireru,

I understand you’re trying to install the newer OneNote from the banner, but this is blocked because Office LTSC 2021 is installed. Office LTSC doesn’t support Microsoft Store apps, so the newer Store‑based OneNote can’t be installed by design; to use it, the device would need a non‑LTSC Office edition, otherwise you’ll need to keep using the OneNote version included with LTSC.
