I have a Surface laptop 7th edition that has suddenly lost wi-fi capabilities. The adapter does not show up in device manager. I have done a factory reset, and it still doesn't show up. I can connect to the network using a docking station.

    Hi Erin Pitcher,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I know losing Wi‑Fi on a new device is really frustrating, especially after already trying a factory reset.

Since the Wi‑Fi adapter no longer appears in Device Manager and the device only connects when using a dock or Ethernet, this points to an issue with the internal Wi‑Fi hardware rather than Windows or drivers.

At this stage, the best recommended step is to submit a repair request online through your Microsoft account so the device can be inspected and serviced under warranty, if applicable.

If you prefer in‑person support, you can also bring the device to a Microsoft‑authorized service location. Their technicians can run diagnostics and complete any necessary warranty repairs using genuine Microsoft parts.

Before sending it in or bringing it to a service center, please make sure any important files are backed up.

If you need to stay connected in the meantime, it’s perfectly fine to continue using a Surface Dock, USB‑C to Ethernet adapter, or a USB Wi‑Fi adapter as a temporary workaround.

I hope this helps, and that your device will be back up and running smoothly once it’s been checked by the service team.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Best regards.

If your Surface Laptop 7th edition is not showing the Wi-Fi adapter in Device Manager, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check for Hardware Issues: Since the adapter is not showing up, there may be a hardware issue. Ensure that the Wi-Fi is enabled in the BIOS settings. You can access the BIOS by pressing the appropriate key (usually F2 or Del) during startup.
    2. Update Drivers: If possible, connect to the internet via the docking station and check for any available updates for your Wi-Fi drivers. You can do this through Device Manager by right-clicking on the Wi-Fi adapter (if it appears) and selecting "Update driver." If it doesn't appear, you may need to download the drivers from the Microsoft website using another device.
    3. Uninstall and Reinstall the Adapter: If the Wi-Fi adapter does appear intermittently, try uninstalling it from Device Manager and then restarting your laptop. Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver upon reboot.
    4. Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit: This tool can help identify and resolve common connectivity issues. You can download it from the Microsoft website.
    5. Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your Surface device has the latest firmware updates installed, as these can affect hardware functionality.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be necessary to contact Microsoft support for further assistance, as there could be a deeper hardware issue with the Wi-Fi adapter itself.
