If unplugged, even with a 100% battery life, my Surface Book's charge gets drained within minutes. The battery simply doesn't hold a charge. I have done all the troubleshooting steps, Windows update, and battery optimization, but nothing works. How do I go about fixing it?

    Hi Alavi-1313,

In addition to the steps already suggested above by Q&A Assist, if the device is still powering off shortly after being unplugged, please try the following additional checks (if not already attempted), as these can help rule out potential firmware or battery detection issues:

    • Force a restart: Select Start > Power > Shut down and wait for the device to turn off completely. Then press and hold the Power button for 20 seconds. Continue holding even if the logo appears, until the logo screen shows again.
    • Check the health of your Surface device using the Surface app: Open the Surface app, then expand Help & support to check the update status. If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them. You can also select Get help and describe the issue you are experiencing. If the Surface app detects any problems, it will provide guidance. *Note: If the Surface app is not installed, it can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Once installed, select Start, search for Surface, then open the app from the results.

If the Surface continues to shut down quickly when unplugged after these checks, this may further indicate a hardware‑related battery concern. In this case, proceeding with service as outlined above would be the recommended next step. You may also bring the device to a nearby Microsoft authorized service provider if you prefer in‑person support.

Please let me know how it goes or if you have any questions.

Because the battery drains within minutes even after all standard troubleshooting, this is most likely a hardware (battery) failure in the Surface Book.

First, confirm what Windows reports about the battery state:

    1. Check the battery icon on the taskbar while plugged in and unplugged:
      • If it shows Battery not detected (red X) and the device turns off when unplugged, go directly to a service request via Device service and repairs.
      • If it shows Plugged in, not charging or similar issues, and you have already tried Windows Update and optimization, the remaining step is hardware service.
    2. If the device still powers off quickly on battery after all software steps (including the basic checks like outlet, cable, correct power supply, and accessories removal), proceed with service:

If the Surface Book battery has physically expanded (for example, the screen or case has started to open or bulge), stop using the device immediately and use the dedicated swollen-battery support form at:

If none of the above applies and the device still will not hold a charge, the only supported resolution path is to submit a service order or use a service center so the battery and related hardware can be inspected and repaired or replaced.
