Windows 11 - Explorer.exe does not refresh

Some weeks ago, ( don't know if this is related to some KBs updates ) my Windows 11 explorer.exe process began to be unstable. In particular it does not automatically refresh so files and directories creations, modifications and deletions are not visible until i manually refresh or restart explorer.exe process.

This is very annoying and also critical cause it produces some tools and apps ( i.e. One Drive ) not working correctly.

Please, I need some help.

The refresh problem in File Explorer is usually caused by OneDrive, open OneDrive settings to check if your files are being synced correctly or if there is a syncing error indicated.

If that does not resolve the problem, click your Start Button, then just type winver and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting dialog box.

The described behavior matches known issues where File Explorer or Explorer.exe becomes unstable or fails to update correctly after certain Windows updates.

For Windows 11, the recommended initial steps are:

    1. Check for and install the latest Windows updates
      • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      • Select Check for updates.
      • Install all available updates and restart the device.
      • This can resolve issues introduced by previous cumulative updates, including Explorer-related problems.
    2. Restart the device
      • Even if no new updates appear, restart Windows to ensure any pending updates or component registrations complete. This can stabilize Explorer.exe and related shell components.
    3. If the issue started after a recent update and persists
      • In similar scenarios where system behavior became unstable after an update, uninstalling the last update from the Windows recovery/troubleshoot environment has restored normal behavior.
      • If the device becomes difficult to use, boot into the Windows recovery options, choose Troubleshoot, then use the option to Uninstall latest update (quality or feature update, depending on what was last installed).
    4. If File Explorer still will not behave correctly
      • As a last resort, use the in-place repair/reset options that preserve files and apps, as documented under Windows recovery options. This has resolved persistent File Explorer issues (such as preview and display problems) while keeping apps and data.

If the environment is an enterprise or managed setup (VDI or similar) on Windows 11 24H2/25H2, and the issue coincides with monthly cumulative updates installed before first logon, there is a known problem where XAML-dependent components (including Explorer and the shell) can behave unexpectedly after updates. In such cases, ensure the device is fully updated and coordinate with the IT administrator to apply any workarounds or future fixes documented for that issue.
