Permanently remove a class notebook

I need to remove / permanently delete several class notebooks.

The class notebooks were created within my school district id and account; some were created using TEAMS, but most were not.

There is no "Delete" or straight forward way to delete the class notebook.

Advice?

    Hello @Mvandersluis ,

Thank you for raising this question.

As you're aware, there isn’t a single “delete” option inside OneNote for Class Notebooks. The correct method depends on where the notebook was created and stored. You must be the creator/owner of the Class Notebook to perform these steps:

If the Class Notebook is stored in OneDrive

This applies to notebooks created using the Class Notebook app (not through Teams).

    • Sign in to OneDrive with your school account
    • Go to My files > Open the Class Notebooks folder

     User's image

    • Select the notebook you want to remove
    • Click Delete

    User's image

    • Confirm the deletion when prompted

Once deleted, the notebook and all its content are removed.

If the Class Notebook was created in Microsoft Teams

Class Notebooks created in Teams are not stored in OneDrive and cannot be deleted independently.

    Option 1: Delete the Team

Deleting the Team removes the Class Notebook along with all associated content.

    • Open Microsoft Teams
    • Find the Team
    • Select the three dots next to the Team name (under Classes)
    • Select Delete team

    User's image

(This image applied to Separate view, if you have Combined view the Teams usually in the Chat tab)

Option 2: Archive the Team instead (recommended in many cases)

If you don’t need the notebook active but want to keep the content, archiving is often the better option.

    • In Teams, go to Manage teams

    User's image

    • Select More options (three dots)
    • Choose Archive team

Archiving keeps all files, conversations, and assignments, but makes the Team read‑only and removes it from your active list.

Important points to keep in mind

    • You cannot delete a Class Notebook from within OneNote itself
    • Notebooks created in Teams are tied to the entire Team
    • Archiving does not delete anything, it simply freezes the class for future reference
    • You must have appropriate permissions (owner or creator) to delete Class Notebook/Teams. In this case, please ask the owner/creator of the Class Notebook or your IT Admin for assistance.

I hope this information helps. If you need any further assistance, please don't hesitate to reply.

Thank you and I wish you have a nice day!
