Jumping screen

Question

When I am typing a document in word, hit return and it jumps back to beginning a d then have to scroll down to continue

Does the document contain protected areas (which might explain why the insertion point can't go to all locations)?

Sorry you’re running into this. From your description, Word seems to jump back to the beginning/top of the document after you press Return/Enter, so you have to scroll back down to continue typing.

Please first make a backup copy of the document, then check whether the issue happens only in this document or in all Word documents.

If it happens in all documents, try updating Office first. You can also test Word without add-ins by pressing Windows + R, typing winword /a and pressing Enter. If the issue does not happen in this mode, it may be related to an add-in, template, or Word setting.

If it happens only with one document, try repairing the file. Go to File > Open > Browse, select the file, choose the arrow next to Open, then select Open and Repair. If the issue continues, create a new blank document and use Insert > Object > Text from File to bring the content into a fresh file.

Also check whether Page break before was accidentally applied. Select the affected text and press Ctrl+Q to reset paragraph formatting. Or right-click the affected paragraph, choose Paragraph, go to Line and Page Breaks, and make sure Page break before is unchecked.

If you’re using a laptop, it is also worth checking your touchpad/mouse settings, as accidental touchpad input can make the cursor jump while typing. You can try enabling Hide pointer while typing or lowering touchpad sensitivity.
