I’m following up to check if you had a chance to try selecting Inline under the Message Preview settings. Please let me know if this helped reduce or remove the preview text from showing as a separate line.

Hello Chris, just adding a comment as I am not able to find this specific setting with another user. I can find the Show Attachments, Show sender images, etc. But not the Show preview text as I believe this user's OWA setting interface is kind of different from the usual.

Just wondering if you may be able to advise, thank you!

For Outlook on the web (OWA), the preview text setting may appear under:

Settings > Mail > Message List

In that section, you should see “Do you want to show preview text?” with options such as 0 Lines, 1 Line, and 2 Lines, as shown in the screenshot.

Or go to View tab > Messages > Message preview

If the Show preview text or 0 Lines option is not available on the user’s side, your organization’s IT administrator may need to review it further. If needed, they can also open a support ticket with Microsoft Support through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for further investigation.

I tried the inline preview text and also didn't like it. It's a lot of "noise" to be looking at. Inline is worse for me than the 1 or 2 line display. My preference is zero preview to reduce the clutter on screen.

I'm experience the same issue, and agree it's a lot of clutter. I need the option to remove the preview entirely. (v1.2026.609.400)

Thank you for the updates and for trying the Inline option.

I understand that the Inline option does not meet your preference, as it can still create too much visual clutter. Based on the current behavior you are seeing, it appears that the zero-preview option may not be available in your current New Outlook interface.

Could you please check your New Outlook version by going to: Settings > General > About Outlook

For reference, in some versions I tested, such as 1.2026.520.400, the Hide preview text option was available.

In another version, such as 1.2026.618.200, there may also be an option similar to 0 line.

Therefore, you may want to try updating New Outlook to a newer version through the Microsoft Store, then check whether the zero-preview or Hide preview text option becomes available.

Should you are already using one of those versions but the option is still not available, or if the update option is not available through the Microsoft Store on your side, I recommend contacting your organization’s IT administrator to check this further. If needed, they may open a support ticket with Microsoft Support through the Microsoft 365 Admin center for further investigation.

Hi Schwartz,

I would like to follow up and provide an additional option to turn off the message preview in the new Outlook.

Besides going to Settings > Mail > Layout, you may also try the following steps:

Open the new Outlook.
Go to the View tab.
Select Message Preview.
Choose Hide preview text.

After selecting Hide preview text, the message preview should no longer appear in your message list.

If the option is not available on your side, or if you need any additional assistance, kindly send me that information or a screenshot so I can better assist you.

Hi Schwartz,

Thank you so much for sharing the screenshot.

Based on the screenshot, it seems that your Outlook interface looks different from the one on my side. This option may vary depending on your Outlook version or your organization’s admin settings.

Since 1 Line is currently selected, Outlook may still show one line of preview text in the message list. Could you please try selecting Inline instead? This may help reduce or remove the preview text from appearing as a separate line under each message.

You can do this by following either of the options below:

Go to View.

Select Message Preview.

Choose Inline.

Or from the settings page:

Go to Settings.

Select Mail.

Go to Layout.

Under Do you want to show preview text?, select Inline.

Please try this and let me know if it works on your side.

From my understanding, you would like to turn off the message preview in the new Outlook after the recent update. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding your request so I can assist you properly.

To turn off the message preview in the new Outlook, please follow the steps below:

Open the new Outlook.
Click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner.
Go to Mail > Layout.
Scroll down to the Message list format.
Uncheck Show preview text.
Save changes

Once this option is unchecked, the message preview text should no longer appear in your message list.
