Check encryption for incoming messages

A static image that shows where to check the security of a received email. In the image, a user clicks the dropdown arrow next to the recipient's name, and opens a pop-up window that shows email security details.

In Gmail, open a message.

At the top, next to the recipient, click Show details Drop down arrow.

In the window, next to “security,” check the encryption type:

Standard encryption (TLS)

Enhanced encryption (S/MIME)

No encryption supported

Learn why some emails aren’t encrypted

If a sender’s email provider doesn’t support TLS, the email may not be encrypted.

If you receive an unencrypted email with sensitive information, notify the sender.

You may get a warning even when your email is encrypted if:

Encryption hasn't worked for a specific email provider in the past.

You send an email from a custom domain name and not @gmail.com. For example, ******@yourdomain.com.

    Hi nerob khan,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

To better understand the issue, could you please confirm whether you are unable to send emails in Gmail, or whether you only want to check the email encryption status?

If you cannot send emails, please provide a bit more information:

    • Are you sending from a personal Gmail account, a work/school account, or a custom domain email address such as ******@yourdomain.com?
    • Does this happen with all recipients or only with specific email addresses?
    • Are you able to send emails from Gmail on another device or browser?

The TLS/S/MIME information is mainly used to check the encryption status of an email. However, if the email cannot be sent, the cause may be related to the account, device, app, recipient, or custom domain email configuration.

Once I have more details, I can suggest more suitable steps.

Note: Please follow the steps in our documentation to enable e-mail notifications if you want to receive the related email notification for this thread.
