Controller compatibility issues on Windows (DualSense instability and inconsistent support)

Hello,

I’m experiencing ongoing and long-standing issues when using a PlayStation 5 (DualSense) controller on Windows.

When connecting the controller via Bluetooth or USB, I consistently run into several problems:

  • The controller connects successfully but disconnects after a few seconds or minutes
  • Bluetooth connection is unstable and frequently drops even during normal desktop use
  • Windows does not natively support PlayStation button prompts, so the controller is always displayed as an Xbox controller (Xbox layout instead of PlayStation icons)
  • Even when using third-party software such as DS4Windows or similar tools, the experience remains inconsistent, sometimes introducing additional instability or input issues

In comparison, Xbox controllers work seamlessly on Windows without additional configuration, while PlayStation controllers still require workarounds and do not appear to be fully supported at a native system level.

This creates a frustrating user experience and makes the DualSense feel unreliable on Windows, despite being a modern and widely used controller. It often feels like users are indirectly pushed toward Xbox controllers simply for stability and compatibility.

I would appreciate clarification on whether these issues are known, and if there are any official fixes, driver improvements, or planned updates to improve native DualSense support and stability on Windows.

Thank you for your time and support.

    Welcome Mawi Ocasio,

I understand how frustrating it can be when your DualSense controller experiences intermittent disconnections, unstable Bluetooth connectivity, and inconsistent behavior on Windows.

Before proceeding, could you please confirm:

    • Which Windows version and build are you currently using (Windows 10 or Windows 11)?
    • Does the disconnection occur only over Bluetooth, or does it also happen when connected directly through USB without DS4Windows or similar software running?

In the meantime, you can try these workaround steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

Option 1: Update Windows and optional driver updates

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update
    • Install all available updates
    • Check Advanced options > Optional updates and install any Bluetooth, chipset, or controller-related drivers

Option 2: Reinstall the Bluetooth adapter

    • Open Device Manager from the Start menu
    • Expand Bluetooth
    • Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and select Uninstall device
    • Restart the PC and allow Windows to reinstall the driver

Option 3: Check Power Management settings

    • Open Device Manager from the Start menu
    • Open the properties of the Bluetooth adapter
    • Under Power Management, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

Option 4: Perform a Clean Boot test

    • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter
    • On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable all
    • On the Startup tab, open Task Manager and disable startup items
    • Restart the PC and test the controller again

I hope the steps above help you deal with your issue.
