When a meeting is being recorded in microsoft team and a participant in the meeting has not joined audio yet or is muted, can you hear the participant and their environment still?

    Hi Alexis

Thank you for your question regarding Microsoft Teams meeting recordings.

I would like to clarify how audio is handled during Microsoft Teams meetings and recordings.

When a participant has not joined the meeting audio (for example, they join the meeting without connecting to their computer audio or dial-in audio), Microsoft Teams does not receive an audio stream from that participant. As a result, neither other attendees nor the meeting recording can hear or capture that participant’s voice or any background/environmental sounds.

Likewise, when a participant is muted in Teams, their microphone audio is not transmitted to the meeting. Because no audio is being sent to the Teams service, it cannot be heard by other participants and is not included in the meeting recording.

    In summary:

    • Participant has not joined audio >No audio is transmitted to the meeting > Nothing can be heard or recorded.
    • Participant is muted in Teams > Microphone audio is not transmitted > Voice and background noise cannot be heard or recorded.
    • Participant is unmuted > Audio is transmitted to the meeting and can be heard by attendees and captured in the recording.

    For reference:

Based on Microsoft's documented behavior, a standard Teams meeting recording only captures audio that is actively transmitted into the meeting. Therefore, if a participant has not connected to audio or remains muted, neither their voice nor their surrounding environment can be captured in the Teams recording.

I hope this clarifies your concern. If you have any additional questions or would like further information about Teams recording behavior and audio processing, please feel free to let me know. I will be happy to assist you further.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
