Set up your Delta Sharing connection

This article outlines the steps to create a Delta Sharing connection.

Supported authentication types

The Delta Sharing connector supports the following authentication types for copy and Dataflow Gen2 respectively.

Authentication type Copy Dataflow Gen2
Key n/a
OAuth (OIDC) n/a

Set up your connection for Dataflow Gen2

You can connect Dataflow Gen2 in Microsoft Fabric to Delta Sharing using Power Query connectors. Follow these steps to create your connection:

  1. Check capabilities to make sure your scenario is supported.
  2. Complete prerequisites for Delta Sharing.
  3. Get data in Fabric.
  4. Connect to Delta Sharing data.
  5. Check limitations and considerations for any current restrictions.

Capabilities

  • Import

Prerequisites

If you use Power BI Desktop you need to install the November release of Power BI Desktop or later. Download the latest version.

The data provider sends an activation URL from which you can download a credentials file that grants you access to the shared data.

After downloading the credentials file, open it with a text editor to retrieve the endpoint URL and the token.

Get data

To get data in Data Factory:

  1. On the left side of Data Factory, select Workspaces.

  2. From your Data Factory workspace, select New > Dataflow Gen2 to create a new dataflow.

Connect to Delta Sharing data

To connect to Delta Sharing data:

  1. Select Delta Sharing from the Power Query Connect to data source page.

  2. In the Delta Sharing dialog, enter the Server URL. You can find this endpoint URL in the credentials file provided by the data provider.

  3. Select the authentication kind:

    • Authentication: Enter the bearer token from your credentials file.
    • OAuth (OIDC): Sign in with your organizational identity provider to use OpenID Connect authentication.
  4. Select Next to proceed.

  5. In the Choose data page, select the tables you want to load, and then select Transform data to transform the data in Power Query Editor.

Limitations and considerations

This section describes any limitations or considerations of the Delta Sharing connector.

You need to make sure that the data loaded with the Delta Sharing connector fits in the memory of your machine. To ensure this, the connector limits the number of imported rows to the Row Limit set by the user.

Set up your connection in a pipeline

Data Factory in Microsoft Fabric doesn't currently support Delta Sharing in pipelines.
