MSN Explorer: About junk e-mail

MSN helps keep junk e-mail out of your Inbox by using powerful filters. MSN Mail automatically rates potential junk e-mail messages based on how closely they match known junk e-mail formats. These junk e-mail ratings are:

  • Very high: The message is probably junk e-mail.

  • High: The message has many attributes of junk e-mail.

  • Medium: The message may be junk e-mail.

  • Low: The message is probably not junk e-mail but is from an unknown sender.

  • Safe: The message is from someone in your address book or safe list, or from a sender authorized by MSN.

In addition to these automatic ratings, you can choose the level of filtering used on your incoming e-mail messages, add people to a safe list or blocked senders list, and set up custom filters. You can train the junk e-mail filter to recognize junk e-mail, which helps to further reduce the junk e-mail you receive.

The combination of the MSN automatic ratings and the filtering you set up helps ensure that junk e-mail gets sent to the correct folder. The more you train your junk e-mail filter, the better it becomes at recognizing junk e-mail.

Note

  • Messages more than seven days old are automatically deleted from the Junk E-Mail folder.

  • If you access your MSN Mail through Windows Live Hotmail, you can delete junk e-mail immediately, rather than after seven days. When you use this feature in Windows Live Hotmail, junk e-mail is also automatically deleted in MSN Mail. To change this setting, sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website, and open the Options page.
