What authentication steps/settings should I double check if the initial login process hangs while the app says "A popup authentication should come up on your browser next" and then never does?

Dataexplorer has been installed but hangs upon bringing up a window to login. A user/pass are never put in so, we are unable to get any further. I need help looking for settings most likely to be a culprit. Also, this is on a MS 365 E5 environment/management.

Thanks for any insights!

    Hi Rick,

I suggest checking these 3 areas:

    1. Check browser popup blocker settings, if edge - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/block-pop-ups-in-microsoft-edge-1d8ba4f8-f385-9a0b-e944-aa47339b6bb5#:~:text=In%20Edge%2C%20go%20to%20Settings,the%20Block%20(recommended)%20toggle.
    2. If Win11, go to: Windows Security \ App & browser control \ Reputation-based protection settings \ protection history - check here for protection actions
    3. Check with your admin regarding any antivirus/antimalware software running that might be blocking the launching of a browser window - admin should be able to verify in logs

    Hope this helps,

    -Chris

    Hi @Rick Osteen
Thanks for the question and using MS Q&A platform.

We appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention regarding the login process hanging at the message "A popup authentication should come up on your browser next." To assist you in troubleshooting the issue, please consider the following steps:

Browser Settings - Ensure that your browser is not blocking popups. Some browsers may have settings that prevent popups from appearing, which could cause the authentication process to hang.

Conditional Access Policies - If your organization has Conditional Access policies in place, these might require specific conditions to be met before allowing authentication. Check with your Microsoft Entra admin to ensure that your account meets these conditions.

Sign-in Method - Verify that the correct sign-in method is selected in the application settings. If you're using Integrated Sign-in, consider switching to a different sign-in method to see if that resolves the issue.

Network Configuration - If you're behind a VPN or firewall, ensure that the necessary URLs for authentication are accessible. This includes URLs related to Microsoft Entra ID and any other services required for the authentication process.

Authentication Library -If there are issues with the authentication library, it might prevent the login process from completing. Make sure that your installation environment meets all prerequisites for the application.

Clear Cache and Cookies - Sometimes, clearing the browser's cache and cookies can resolve issues related to authentication.

Ask: What authentication steps/settings should I double check if the initial login process hangs while the app says "A popup authentication should come up on your browser next" and then never does?

Solution: This ended up being a couple of things. In a MS365 managed environment, the laptop/pc was not onboarded correctly, and the user did not have enough admin priv's to get the software installed for "everyone" instead of just the one user.

If I missed anything please let me know and I'd be happy to add it to my answer, or feel free to comment below with any additional information.
