I'm curious what the limits for Task Lists are in Microsoft Loop. Is there a limit to the number of task lists that you can create in a workspace? And what are the limits for the actual task lists, I found this article on Planner but it says 'basic plans' and I know that task lists are different.

Currently, there is no fixed limit on the number of task list components you can create within a Loop workspace or page. You can add multiple task lists to a single page and create many pages containing task lists within the same workspace. Microsoft has not published a specific maximum count for this.

However, practical limitations may arise from the integration with Microsoft Planner and overall workspace storage:

Planner Bucket Limit: Each task list in a Loop page maps to a bucket in the underlying Planner plan. Planner (Basic) supports up to 200 buckets per plan, meaning a single Loop page can contain up to 200 task lists that sync to one plan. Beyond this, additional buckets cannot be created in the same plan.
Multiple Pages: When task lists are distributed across multiple Loop pages, each page typically generates its own Planner plan (once a task is added). Planner allows up to 400 plans per user or group, so a single user could theoretically create task lists on up to 400 distinct Loop pages before reaching this limit, well beyond typical usage scenarios.
Workspace Storage: Loop workspaces previously had a 5GB limit, but this restriction has been removed. Workspace content now counts against your OneDrive or SharePoint storage quota. Since task lists are primarily text-based, storage is unlikely to be a limiting factor unless you’re managing an exceptionally large volume of tasks.

1/ Each Loop task list can contain up to approximately 9,000 tasks, with a maximum of 3,000 open tasks at any given time. Tasks support three editable fields: title, assignee, and due date. Loop currently does not support custom columns, sub-tasks, attachments, or labels. Task titles are limited to 255 characters, and each task can be assigned to up to 20 users.

For more advanced task management features, you can open the associated Planner interface directly from the Loop component.

Though, I do have a question regarding your point:

This does not seem to happen, multiple task lists on a page, create multiple plans, I'm not seeing auto-buckets created for each task list, am I missing something?

While Microsoft documentation states that each task list in a Loop page maps to a bucket in the underlying Planner plan, and that Planner (Basic) supports up to 200 buckets per plan, the actual implementation in Loop may not always reflect this mapping in a straightforward way.

To answer your question in more detail, I would like to provide the following information:

When you create a Task List in Microsoft Loop (whether in the Loop app, Teams meeting notes, etc.), the tasks are automatically synced to Planner and To Do. As soon as you add at least one task, Loop will generate a Planner plan behind the scenes and keep it in sync. According to Microsoft’s official support documentation, all tasks from the first task list go into the first bucket of that plan. If you then add additional task lists on the same Loop page (or in the same collaborative notes document), each new task list should create a new bucket within that same Planner plan. In other words, the intended model is one Planner plan per Loop page, containing multiple buckets if multiple task lists exist on that page. This design would let you manage all the page’s tasks in one Planner board, with each Loop task list appearing as a separate bucket for organization.

Notably, Planner (in its standard “Basic” mode) supports up to 200 buckets per plan. Microsoft explicitly calls this out, implying that a single Loop page can theoretically hold hundreds of task lists that all sync into one Planner plan (since 200 buckets is the cap).

However, although the original design of Microsoft Loop is that each Loop page will create a single Planner plan with multiple buckets corresponding to each task list, users have reported that this is not happening as expected. In many cases, when users create two or more task lists on the same Loop page, the system ends up creating multiple separate Planner plans instead of adding a new bucket to the first plan. Each task list behaves as an independent entity, generating its own plan with the default name “Tasks”.
